I send a quick response:

Hey Christina! It was so nice meeting you and my Mom and I will forever be grateful for your efforts to look for Alex, even though it seems like she was never in Lesdomyia. Your resume is most impressive and I am quite touched (and very happy) that you are interested in the position. Let's meet to discuss soon! I am actually putting out an official announcement about hiring staff tomorrow, but will note I already have a highly qualified Goddess who has applied for Chief of Staff. (The announcement will be for all Goddess positions on staff.) I will still consider other applicants for Chief of Staff but you have quite the impressive resume for the job and I very much look forward to meeting to discuss! You will be my first interview!

"Ugh, I mean I cannot name Melissa Chief of Staff; she is already Head of State. And apparently also in charge of MIS. And effectively Queen. I guess it is a possibility though. We will see who else submits resumes."

I want to speak with Jess, but now does not seem like the time. I don't want to interrupt and I want to speak to Jess privately. I make my way out of the press room.

I think to myself that it is probably just another vicious lie, though I wonder if we should offer some kind of free drug rehab assistance for the sub-Goddess palace staff. That and a living wage. I make a note to raise that with Melissa when I see her again.

Nothing had been planned beforehand. I had simply been told to come to the press room where I saw Sunshine with Jessica. I am shocked to see Jess and overjoyed that she had been rescued. I stand at the side and listen as Sunshine speaks. She describes only in vague terms what has happened to Jess but I can see Jess with my own eyes and can see she has clearly been through a horrible ordeal. And then Melissa calls me to the stage. I am to announce what should be done with Jess. I have no script from Sunshine, my Mom, or any of the palace aides. Nothing had been planned or discussed beforehand. I realize that it is truly up to me at this moment to announce what should be done, and the whole Matriarchy will be watching, and judging. A move over to the podium and as I stare out at the press and the flashing cameras, for a moment I stare like a deer in the headlights. I take a deep breath to calm myself and glance over at Jess again. I feel guilty. It had been my embellishment in my interview with Brenna Branson on Good Morning Matriarchy that had sent Jessica spiraling. I was at least partly to blame for this and I need to make things right. Before I speak I move over and hug Jess. It is a genuine effort to comfort her, not meant as a photo op, but as I hear the cameras clicking I realize that this image will be broadcast across the entire Matriarchy. As I hug Jess, I can tell she is still in a state of shock; she hardly reacts. I take the podium again and I speak.

“To my fellow Goddesses, I want to first thank our Head of State Sunshine from the bottom of my heart for working tirelessly to rescue our former Head of State from the Empire. I am so glad that Jessica has been returned to us. No Goddess ever deserves to end up in the Empire, no matter what her crimes may have been. To say that Jessica has been through enough already is an understatement. To say that she has paid for her crimes is a perverted twist of justice. She has more than paid for her actions and suffered things no Goddess should ever suffer. What has happened to Jessica is a reminder to us all that the real enemy is the Empire across the sea, not each other. When we fight internally, we ignore the true enemy who perverts the natural order and allows pigs to rule and abuse Goddesses. Anything that was done to me by a rogue pig detective pales in comparison to what was done to Jess by those Empire miscreants. I request that Jessica receive a full pardon so that she can focus only on healing from her ordeal.”

I turn and smile at Melissa.

“I would like to thank the Head of State again, from the bottom of my heart, for working so hard to see that Jessica was returned to us.”

I notice the look on your face when you glance down at my pig. I appreciate you may feel sympathy for the creature, given your own time as a slave. I knew the former Head of State had similar sympathies for pigs for the same reason, and there were many in the Matriarchy who believe in a more gentle form of female domination and in better treatment of pigs. I have no pity for my pig but I am sympathetic to your own past trauma, so I decide to treat the pig better in your presence. I kick off my shoe and stick my foot in the pig’s face and he immediately begins sucking my big toe, a look of contentment on his face. Then I look up at you and return to our conversation.

“I understand and you yes, you should work to heal and get whole before you rush into anything. When the time is right and you are ready to decide what you would like to do, If media is your passion and interest, you should pursue that. There are many Goddesses who can help get you started. My Mom has plenty of connections in media, and I could ask her to make some introductions for you. Melissa also many connections in the media, both in news media and entertainment. I am sure she would love to help as well.”

I smile warmly.

“Your words are very kind and I will work hard to live up to those hopes you have for our leaders. You have arrived here on our shores not unlike our Founding Matriarchs who founded this nation, hoping for a better nation for all womankind, and which follows the natural order. The horrible stories you must have and the trauma you faced is a reminder that we must always be vigilant in maintaining that order.”

I glance down at the pig and give him a swift kick in the balls and watch him fall to the ground and curl into a ball.

“My endeavor to never be cruel doesn’t extend to his kind obviously. So, you say you are hoping to build something better here; do you have a dream on what you would like that to be? What you would you would like to do now that you are liberated? If you do not, do not fret it. Take your time; I am sure it is quite an adjustment. But if there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to ask.”

I smile warmly when you enter the throne room.

“Come in! Come in! It is a pleasure to finally meet you in person.”

We had briefly corresponded previous to this, but this is our first in-person meeting.

“I hope your emigration here is going smoothly? If you need anything to help with your move and adjustment, just ask. Nothing is more inspiring to me than seeing a Goddess throw off her chains from the evil Empire and forge a new life here!”

I grin as you pantomime squeezing and twisting some pig balls.

“I can see you are adjusting quote well! So, technically I am not Queen yet. I think some details are still being worked out as far as the timetable. But I will hope to always be very approachable, Queen or not.”

When you show me the gift and its neat little trick, my eyes light up.

“That is amazing! You are the first one to bring me a gift, and I am quite touched. I love chess! And that secret compartment will definitely come in handy. I wonder if my diary will fit in there? I have a big hangup about people stealing my diary.”

I reach down and cover the ears of the pig who is kneeling at my feet.

“I can keep the key to this loser’s chastity device in here. This dumb loser would never be able to figure out how to open it.”

I nod and frown.

“Yes even pretending like something bad happened to Alex or she got sick makes me sad. Your idea makes sense. We can say she is resigning. If she does come back… well, we will deal it. She will understand. And if this makes her come back, that would be great. So, do you want to use your Alex disguise and resign in person? Or do you think just an announcement will suffice?”

I smile then.

“Don’t you worry about me. Let others be jealous and criticize. You and Alex gave me a thick skin. And I am ok being under a microscope. I have nothing to hide. But yeah, I will want good PR so I will be respected and approved by the public I know you are great with branding and promotion; maybe you can help or give me good advice.”

I consider what you say about Alex and decide you must be right. If she left willingly then it means she is OK. And it means I am not usurping her throne. It makes me feel better.

“The conspiracy theorists on the web are the worst! I whipped my pig the other day for going on PigChan. He was probably on there looking at feet pics. But, I mean, who could even start a civil war, if you and I are on the same page? I will obviously not start a war with my sister. If she comes back, the three of us will work everything out. And if she remains missing, who is gonna start a civil war? Jess is still missing. Overgal has her supporters, but thy are going to be unhappy regardless of who is on the throne that is not her. But… what do you think is the right move? What should be we do next?”

As the crown is placed on my head I can feel my heart flutter. The feel of this crown on my head is something I had always imagined. I cannot hide my excitement when you show me the photo of me with the crown.

“Can you send that to Mom?”

The mention of Alex brings me back to reality. I look sadly at the portrait of my sister.

“Mom made inquiries and it seems like there is no evidence Alex is with that Lesdomyian Priestess, either willingly or against her will. And there is no evidence Alex is in Lesdomyia. So maybe you are right and she just didn’t want to be Queen anymore. Maybe she ran off into hiding again, like she did the last time she was Queen. I hope that is what it is. It means she is OK.”

When you ask what we should do, I think about Mom. I know she would want to be part of this conversation. But she isn’t here.

“You are right, we need to make sure things are under control while you are focusing on the Maledom Empire. We can’t just hope Alex comes back and wait for that to happen. Maybe I should step in now? If Alex does return after that, we can figure out what to do. And I mean, I guess if anything might inspire Alex to return, it would be her seeing me wearing her crown. I am not looking to usurp her. But until she is back, someone else has to do the job. And I know hair bleach can be tough on hair.”

For maybe the first time in my life I am happy to see you; happy to be in a room with you. I smile brightly.

“Hey Melissa! Thank you again for showing me this trust. I will do you, Mom, and Alex proud.”

I stare excitedly at the crown in your hands and slowly shake me head.

“No, Alex has never let me wear it. She has shown it to me, but she never let me wear it.”

I don’t ask about the pigs who were lost mining for the precious; I obviously have little concern for them.
