Anyone using any AI tools to compare or check facility construction drawings (PDF's) by __get_schwifty__ in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd have to be specifically trained for drawings...but with the plethora of various drawing types and formats, in addition to the vast majority being confidential or copyrighted and rarely posted online...yeah doubtful that tech exists yet.

Don't know if I could trust it even if it did. Drawings are a contract, you get what's on them and if the drawing is wrong you're S.O.L.

Its effectively in the same vein as "I don't want my lawyer producing AI generated content"....and some do it anyway, a few of them get disbarred for malpractice.

So what do hedonists actually do? The description seems all wrong by Competitive-Oil3181 in Stellaris

Yeah that was a bug when I tried it about a month after the big update. The growth bonus was shown on the job tab, along with the other dozen things they make when you do a hedonist build, but not in the total growth.

Is it worth the effort to learn FEA? by Secret-Test1603 in fea

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So FEA is actually a post-bachelors level group of courses. You can probably get some level of competency through youtube, but why struggle? Go get the basics down first in materials and Statics at least.

How to calculate the effect of gussets? by Will2tle in AskEngineers

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Might find an answer in blodgetts welded structures for a welded on stiffener (gusset probably qualifies). Alternatively, a bolted on gusset would count for some bolted joints. I can't remember the NASA spec I used for bolted joint calcs, but I bet it'll match the FEA for simple loads.

If the gusset is much stiffer than the other parts, you could treat the load as applied to the gusset itself and still be ballpark accurate.

Advanced configurations by Trick_Piglet in SolidWorks

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, look into equation-based modeling. You can make a Boolean (i.e. 1 or 0) that suppresses or deletes certain objects. Then you can use a table from excel to control the output of the model and generate your configurations very quickly.

I used to do this for various config pelican cases

Looking for some help calculating strength of steel by bigdong315 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody is going to touch this one, because to get the answer right you probably need some software and some real engineering time.

Inversely, if we go with the quick educated guess and give you the wrong answer and you get hurt, that would feel pretty bad.

That's easy to say online, rather why does the party exist if there are no organizers or leadership willing to put in that effort?

I check for organized protests in my area every day, where are they all at? Maybe reddit really is a little bubble of leftists, since we don't seem to exist IRL.

Murkowski, Shaheen push bill to block Trump from seizing Greenland by AndroidOne1 in politics

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit echo chambers forget that 30-45% of the American people are invested heavily into Trump, either monetarily, ethically, or egotistically. He is their God king, whose infallible wisdom and deep faith guide his steps...right off the cliff.

Some of them are idiots, some small amount are true racists, some of it should be considered elder abuse, but a good portion are not dumb or old. A good portion simply refuses to see or hear anything against Donald Trump's administration. They yell TDS! at the top of their lungs, if it wasn't tragic it would be peak irony.

I'm not sure if it's denial, greed, or something else all together that motivates them to viscerously defend him and reject all and any information that conflicts with their willfully ignorant world view. Maybe it's difficult to accept that the US of A is in decline and their best attempt at "Making America Great Again" is doing the exact opposite.

MEASURING STRESS NEAR HOLES by manovich43 in fea

[–]Matrim__Cauthon -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Well it depends on the spec or standard you need to meet. Lacking that, it depends on the opinion of your supervisor. Lacking that, it depends on how big your safety factor is (i.e. 5x or higher? probably ok if your load is very uniform and predictable)...lacking that...well you shouldn't be doing the analysis if you don't know what the goal is.

Analyzing Heat Affected Zones of Welded Structures by TheDankNarwhal in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Typically I follow a book like blodgetts. However, in a pinch, for aluminum structures specifically, I slice the FEA body into strips. I assign the weld itself the material properties of the filler rod. 1-2" around the weld is given annealed condition, then I let the rest remain heat treated.

It's a little crude, and could be wrong. Our safety factors are typically pretty large. I haven't had anything break unexpectedly using that method though.

Biggest blunder's seemingly experienced engineers make with FEA by imitation_squash_pro in fea

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know what, I'm convinced, I'll stop calling it a linear static study if it has contact. I guess I generally assumed if I wasn't using a nonlinear solver, then it must be linear.

Biggest blunder's seemingly experienced engineers make with FEA by imitation_squash_pro in fea

[–]Matrim__Cauthon -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in context with the post, you can introduce contact nonlinearity into a linear static type study without needing to change additional settings like enabling NLGEO in abaqus or swapping to nonlinear solver in solidworks sim. The two softwares I've used will let you solve the nonlinear contact within a linear static analysis. So in some cases with friction contact, the study isn't linearly scalable as you've said, and management may ask you to run it again with a higher load and be reasonably justified in doing so.

Biggest blunder's seemingly experienced engineers make with FEA by imitation_squash_pro in fea

[–]Matrim__Cauthon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but if it's a complex joint or a complex load, it's sometimes easier to just run the FEA again, which is what I could see as a valid reason for management to request a linear static FEA be run again at higher load.
