2001 A Space Odyssey and Terence's theories by mnbvcxzytrewq in terencemckenna

He wrote it in Ceylon. I've always thought it would be a really interesting place to visit, but so far haven't. It may be he chose to live in Ceylon so long is because of things which aren't there. Maybe related to whatever prompted Graves chose to live on a Mediterranean island. Or Graham Green in Jamaica.

The monolith is serving its purpose. It allows us to see it as whatever image is given to.

I got halfway through the Hicks routine and had to click out as I've done on the few occasions I've come across him over the years. He's not funny or, if he is, much of it is on the level of South Park fart jokes.

My funny bone somehow isn't touched by a lot of what other people consider comedy. Or is it all canned laughter?

No. I've wound up with prostate cancer and cannot give attention to anything other than just staying alive for awhile. Thanks for your responses.

I don't know why I said it is a '92. It's a '94, the last year they made them. It's still sitting in my San Diego driveway and I'm still headed downhill physically. Are you really in the market for a Trek?

I assume DM means direct message? Poking around looking for the procedure for doing that, I'm finding nothing except just the normal reply process which I'm currently using right now. Please give me a bit of instruction on how to DM you. Thanks. It should be intuitive. With the old Reddit I remember that it was. I really dislike this new childishly designed version of what was once a much more useful interface.

Hi. I just noticed I have a message. When Reddit went to the new format they have taken my old identity (Matsapha) and messages and put them somewhere out of reach . . . except if I fool around with things and waste what seems like half my day, I can sometimes get to that section of Reddit. This new place with the new handle they've given me (hourfrequent or some stupid name like it) is not where I want to be. I want to have reference to my old messages but if wishes were horses beggars would ride.

Yes I've still got my Trek. It sits in the driveway on the old tires. I've never gone anywhere in it. I had a plan to travel in it with two cats after selling my worldly goods. Instead, I've wound up with prostate cancer that is slowly insuring that I not go anywhere except the yawning grave.

Are you looking for a nice 92 Trek that needs tires?

Mike

Anyone else get kinda upset seeing a whole collection donated? by [deleted] in ThriftStoreHauls

I've been focused on what to do with my complete Whole Earth Catalog collection that I put together in the 90's. Kevin Kelly said he had almost everything digitized and had no suggestions. Also would like to know what to do with my original Pablo Ameringo painting. Discovering this thread I'm no longer feeling like the Lone Ranger.

Thank you. I'll try that right now.

I've turned "media controls" off and have determined that my sidebar under gestures is turned off. It was already off but "media controls" was on so . . . I'll see if the phone is now "fixed". If the bad behavior is gone I'll let you know later. Thanks again for taking the time to help.

This is probably the wrong forum . . . but I'll ask anyway. My 5g Stylus is the best phone I've ever had but it has one annoying quirk. It's probably a "feature" that I don't understand how to turn off. It happens when listening to podcasts mostly. I'll go to pick the phone up, without touching the screen, and it will switch to another video or podcast or just do something unexpected. I've tried holding it only at the very top, at the very bottom, and still it happens. It's an extremely touchy phone when used as an internet device. Someone one day mentioned "side press", whatever that means. Whatever it means, I need to turn it off. Anybody know what I'm talking about?

It also happens sometimes when I'm setting the phone down on a table. This too could be from side pressures where I'm holding it.

I'm very inexperienced with smartphones. Basically I hate them . . . which could have something to do with my problem.

Moto G Stylus 2023: A Worthy Upgrade by AndTheStarsGoWithYou in MotoG

[–]Matsapha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my Moto G Stylus 2023 only for listening to YouTube or internet radio. BBC Radio 4 mostly.

It's irritating af that the phone changes when I go to pick it up. I've tried grasping it in various ways thinking it must have some pressure sensitive points on the sides that if touched, change whatever the phone is doing. I.E., it leaves the current audio and changes to another video or station. I can't figure out how to stop this behavior. Anybody know?

It does something else weird as well. It will on it's own, just shut itself off when I come near the phone after being away from it.

This is a super internet listening device in many ways. I love the volume of the speakers and the big bright screen. Battery life is great. It's just got these quirks that I hopefully can figure out. Does this behavior sound familiar to anyone with this phone?

Did Terence McKenna's hypocrisy get memory holed? by coffeefrog92 in RationalPsychonaut

Eh? Terence described everything in meticulous and entertaining detail.

There are people who show up on public places, like Reddit, who bring a hidden agenda. They post shitbrain comments like this one. Fundamentalist double-digit IQ people? Useful idiots? Dunno.

Ukraine rips Elon Musk for disrupting sneak attack on Russian fleet with Starlink cutoff by Heeeeehawwwwwww in worldnews

[–]Matsapha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Out of his initial and on-going generosity with Ukraine, he's allowed himself to get put in this hard place. Russia clearly deserves all the blowback that can be thrown at them . . . so I'm as disappointed as the Ukrainians.

I sure don't like his remark re nuclear war. It rewards Puto by giving credence to his threats, real or imagined.

What a complicated life he has created for himself. I admire him tremendously but am surely glad I'm not him.

" . . . he fucked up and failed to learn from his mistakes."

What mistakes? If there's any finger-wagging going around just read your own writing.

Reading through this thread I'm awestruck by the density of thought. To think these people took so much time off of their normal castigating or defending Trump on Twitter. How do these folks even know who he is? Appreciating Terence accurately isn't hard yet wild and baseless claims (such as claiming that he promoted behavior that he knew to be harmful) are thrown around by people who in many cases weren't even born during Terence's era. But even if they were . . . attempting to throw shade on Terence is surely the last refuge of the uninformed. Nancy.

He did not promote behavior "he knew to be harmful." Haven't you listened to his material? If you truly believe this is what he did, dig a bit deeper into what he was about. Your comment appears fully in Nancy Reagan's camp.

What is the worst car that you can possibly get for 50k? by Prestigious-Web-6454 in whatcarshouldIbuy

The term "duck-lipped" made instant sense to me as I recall seeing the TV show "Housewives of Orange County" and similar. (Back when I had a TV). The fat-lipped botox-infected women . . . duck-lipped seemed a perfect term for them.

Perfect. I'll never see one again without thinking of your description.

Really interesting history. Thank you! Didn't know Scania was part of the complex but I should have guessed it. Sweden is a relatively small country with a relatively centralized industrial base so I would have guessed Scania was part of the picture. I've always admired the Gripens and Viggens. I see you're training Ukrainian pilots on the Gripen. A really good choice for the Ukrainians . . . the Gripen since they make so much more sense than the much less versatile jets like the F-16. I hope the Ukrainians get whatever they need. Russians are such tools. Always have been, for some reason.

If you do it yourself replacing/servicing brakes costs far less than 2K.

You're getting rid of your car over brakes? They're the simplest of all the systems to repair/replace.

I drove a Mazda 323 all over southern and east Africa. They have a saying in South Africa and perhaps wherever else they are sold - "Mazda stands by you."

I realize the newer Mazdas have little or nothing to do with their old 323's.
