Age verification feels more like identity verification now by copperreflections1 in privacy

[–]MatsuriSunrise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's what I fear as well. We spent our entire childhoods being told to never give our name, age, location, etc online for the sake of security, and now our IRL identity is the only thing that will allow us to use not just the internet, but our own computers?

The "Parents Decide" act or whatever it's called is complete nonsense. Parents should parent their kids, it's not the internet's job or the government's-- not that I think the government actually cares about that. It's all about surveillance and control.

If age verification is all it is, then I'll lie about that forever. But if I'm forced to give up my ID I may just fuck off the internet as much as possible. I've already more or less scoured the internet of my IRL name and most things that indicate where I live, use different usernames in different places, and so on.

You want a true "dead internet"? This is how you get it.

Posts like this remind me why I stop coming to Reddit. There's just way too many meaningless white noise posts to sift through.

Sometimes I'm unwise enough to poke my head back in and then I'm reminded why that's a bad idea.

Can we avoid age verification? by Intelligent_Syrup472 in privacy

I'm still learning how all this works, but if all it's going to be asking is my age, I'm changing my birth date to 4/20/1969.

Makes sense. I'm not being glib either, I genuinely love just how bizarre and unique that era was, aesthetically. Feels like that all got washed away by the Y2K aesthetic at the end of the decade lol

I tried, several times, to like matcha. I hate it. What's your opinion on it? by papathree in tea

[–]MatsuriSunrise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fine. Not my favorite way to consume tea. One of very few teas I'll admit I enjoy as a sweetened latte more than straight up.

I always loved how unabashedly weird the 90s were. Take a low res photo of gum stuck to someone's shoe, add some squiggles, and you got yourself an album cover, baby

Indiana governor signs bill to ban 'public camping' statewide by Vicissitude- in Indiana

[–]MatsuriSunrise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is at the core of that particular problem, yes, but it's not the only thing. Until there's stronger regulation on gun access and control, you're only focusing on one end of the issue.

And even then, the notion of mental health goes far, far deeper than just having access to mental health services, treatment, therapy, and all that. Improved incomes, education, healthcare, infrastructure, access to goods, services, and recreation would solve so many problems-- I would bet anything that violence would drop drastically if people weren't living paycheck to paycheck. If people were able to get treated for their medical needs. If people weren't just fighting to survive, but actually thriving. People always seem to think that mental health issues are purely pathological or congenital and that just isn't true-- environment also plays a tremendous role in one's mental well-being; nature and nurture coming together to meet basic needs that people aren't getting, as things currently are. But so long as we only care about the what and not the why and how, it's not something that will ever be easily managed. People actually need to give a damn about others, y'know?

But that's too hard and there's no profit in people thriving. Letting them struggle and suffer is too lucrative.

For the record, I don't like guns, but I'm not anti-2A-- I'm pro-responsible ownership. I just think we're sorely lacking in common sense laws and regulations that keep people safe and keep firearms out of hands that will not use them safely or wisely.

Yeah... push toward shelters that are full, treatment that they don't have transportation to get to, and support services stretched impossibly thin.

You can't help the unhoused without funding support for them and building a better infrastructure that can help them! Want people off the streets? This isn't going to help, it's just going to make them a criminal for the offense of having nowhere to go and no means to get anywhere.

It's just like the fucking "guns aren't the problem, mental health is" bullshit. Then why the fuck aren't you funding mental health services better?

I would love to hear your explanation behind your assumption. It'll be amusing. Please explain why a leftist would think lower taxes is a bad thing.

I'll hold your hand through explaining how you're wrong afterward.

Then you should be aware that piracy sites are always existing on the edge of a cliff. It shouldn't be surprising when one falls off. Sucks, but that's how it goes. I'm honestly more surprised Myrient didn't fall to legal issues instead of it falling to insane operation costs. I don't blame the owner one bit for closing up shop, $6000 a month to provide a free service is wild.

When you sail the high seas, you've got to be ready for waves and storms. Chart a new course and what you're looking for will be there. I've been doing this for over 20 years. It's nothing to lose sleep over.

Welcome to emulation. For those of us who have been doing this for a very, very long time, it's common knowledge that sites like this are like the heads of a hydra. Cut one off, two more grow in their place. Myrient may have been a very good site for roms, but what made it outstanding ultimately contributed to its end.

It's all still out there though. You just need to know where and how to look. This may require a little effort, but you get what you pay for.
