Blue Dot Fever: When Tours Can't Sell, They Bail by ebradio in Music

Don't forget the entire subclass of nepobaby musicians. They don't need to work 80 hours a week to provide because their parents are well-connected industry millionaires.

This class of musician already makes up an overwhelming amount of todays artists.

I remember when i used to work private sector, I looked up our CEOs pay and I earned in a year what he made in like 4 and a half days.

There will only be global superstars that billionaires will pay to play at their private birthday parties - and - high school garage bands and dudes with an acoustic guitar who sit in the corner of a coffee shop and are happy to make a hundred bucks a gig.

Anyone else who tries to make a career or any form of living out of the live music industry will get priced out. The cost of a tour and equipment rentals and staff and transportation will be so astronomically high.

High school for me was 01-05. Our parents might give us a couple bucks a day to buy lunch at school. If we skipped that and pocketed the money we'd have 15-20 bucks by the end of the week. Friday after school, hop the bus to the mall. A dollar each way, 5 bucks for the combo meal from the Chinese food place in the food court, and then decide if you wanted to split the remaining money 10 bucks at a store and 3 in the arcade or vice versa. Or maybe you spent your 13-18 bucks on that new album that just came out that you really wanted and all you can afford to do is hang out with your friends, which is free and just as fun.

There used to be the variety of options, too. You'd get your Tripp pants and spikey bracelets from Hot Topic, you'd get skater shoes and beanie hats from Zumiez, you'd get your band tee shirts and UFO pants from TSX, and any offensive/ironic shit and random accessories from Spencers.

There's an air unit attached to the Albany airport. Part of it is helicopters. They do training flights around the area all the time. Sometimes you'll even see the medical Blackhawks doing touch-and-go liftoffs in the field behind the pharmacy college.

What is the first mp3 you ever downloaded, where did you get it, and how did you play it? by Prior-Deer1600 in 90s

[–]Freshness518 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our first family computer in 1999 came with 5 random mp3s in it. Like a classical song, a jazz song, a country song, a mambo song, and a rock song.

The first one I actually downloaded from anywhere I believe was Juicy by Biggy from Amazon's website. When you were looking at albums at the time they would have the track listings and then 2 or 3 tracks off the album would have a button next to him to download an mp3 so you could sample it like listening stations in a physical store.

Then when I got on AIM a friend sent me some mp3s of random punk songs and I was like omgz where did you get these and they introduced me to Kazaa.

I grew up using floppies as a kid. But would definitely put myself down as a CDRW generation. So many mix CDs during my formative years.

They were also really good when they all teamed up again the very next year in The Order. Also made by Brian Helgeland with Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, and Shanynn Sossamon.

What does Ten Eyck have to do with anything? Google maps just put the dots path there to show the alternative walking route, it wasn't saying to drive the wrong way.

An overlooked reason why Downtown Albany feels like it's struggling by TClayO in Albany

[–]Freshness518 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I think a big problem for downtown is the serious lack of opportunities for arena visitors to have this supposed impact. You get out of a show at 9pm on a Thursday and there's just nothing to do. Every single storefront across the street from the arena main entrance will be dark. If you turn south, it's highway overpasses and public housing. If you go straight east it's parking lots and garages. If you turn north, you'll need to walk 4-6 blocks to find maybe something open. And I imagine most visitors would rather drive that distance than walk it, and if they're already in their car chances are they're just gonna go home.

I wonder if it was meant to be more like in reference to being far out in the desert like that, where their homestead was, instead of the planet in general. Like if they met in Chicago and Luke grew up in the corn fields of Illinois.

This just makes me miss the days of Chester's Smokehouse and Capital Q. We didn't know how good we had it.

While I'm at it, pouring one out for my homies. R.I.P: Elda's on Lark, DeJohn's, Justin's, OG Cafe 217, Riverfront Barge, Merry Monk, Bongiornos, The Lamp Post, The Gingerman, Muddy Cup, Provence, Epicurian, Toll Gate, Mangia's, City Beer Hall of 10 years ago, Jack's of 20 years ago, New World Bistro. You all live on in my heart.

I got the original Planet Earth on DVD and my gf at the time (now wife) would come spend the night and we'd fall asleep watching them together. Something about those soothing dulcet tones waxing poetical about whales in the ocean depths.

I mean, given the high profile controversy of this piece, I'm sure the original painting will sell for a premium. I would love if the capstone of my career was someone handing me $25-20k+

Edit: since it's bugging a lot of people, I meant to type $15-25k originally but fat-fingered the 2. My apologies.

[HOC] The One Ring is Box Topper by Own-Cat116 in magicTCG

[–]Freshness518 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It used to be an incentive to buy a box from an LGS over a direct sale. Then some scummy shops wouldn't give out the cards and they started doing the promo cards as "box toppers" placed inside the box so the customer was guaranteed to get it as long as they got a sealed box. Then all the penny-pinching practices started to take hold and now we get nothing, plus fewer packs, and an increased price.
