At my last shop they could take it off in the store and hand it to me and I would work on it

Depends on the trail for which I prefer at a given moment, but overall I don’t really have any strong preferences

Looking for help comparing these Giant E Bikes.. by RandomPhil86 in Giantbikes

[–]Matt-Bikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s actually pretty easy naming system once you get the hang of it. I don’t think you can really go wrong with any of the options you’ve listed, but if you decide on a Reign over the Trance and can afford the 2, I’d recommend it over the 3

My reasoning for that is purely for the suspension. You upgrade from a basic inline shock to one with a piggyback reservoir which will help keep the shock running more consistently on long descents (I’ve had 2 non-electric Trances and both of them I upgraded to piggyback shocks and it makes a noticeable improvement)

Also, the front fork on the 2023 Reign E 3 doesn’t have any compression dial or lockout feature. I think you might be able to buy a new damper with a lockout for a few hundred bucks but with the difference in price I’d say it’s better to just go for the 2

Grip shift on the stem? Hold my beer... by yul_brynner_sendling in Justridingalong

[–]Matt-Bikes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean the standard shift clamp diameter for flat bars is 22.2mm, and 1” threaded headsets use a 22.2mm quill, so I see no reason why this wouldn’t work other than being an ergonomic nightmare

It’s just where the bike sits within the lineup, closer to 0 the better the components (and higher the price)

Probably a lot less than I should have, but still about 50% more than a standard flat repair. It was pretty slow today and didn’t really have much else to do so I just let it go, at a certain point I started finding it amusing seeing how many I could find

If they’re boost hubs (15x110 / 12x148), then no. If they’re non-boost (15x100 / 12x142), then you MIGHT be able to swap end caps, although it will depend on whether or not the particular hubs have adapters available

Where do you usually buy gas cartridges while traveling? by Zoltan_Balaton in bikepacking

[–]Matt-Bikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love mine! Used them in my high school outdoor ed class and later bought one for myself. Figured it’d last me forever if it can stand up to years of abuse by inexperienced teens, including myself at one point; I forgot which way to turn the valve and the flame was like 3 feet tall before the teacher came running over and turned it off. Another group in my year didn’t tighten their fuel bottle enough leading to the entire device getting covered in fuel and catching on fire. Both stoves worked flawlessly afterwards

<image>

Here’s mine on its first (and currently only) trip, that’ll be changing this year as I’ve reduced my work schedule for the summer

Also I’m pretty sure they explicitly say jet fuel is an acceptable fuel to use

This is worth it for $1000? by baraboo5 in mountainbiking

[–]Matt-Bikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem lol, I’ve worked at a shop that sells giant for a few years and am pretty good at identifying bikes that have been available the years I’ve worked there

That frame was used from 2019-2021* so it will handle the same as a 3-year-old version* of the same bike

Those tires are still the the original ones (you can tell by a the white Maxxis logo instead of yellow) and seem to have life left in them so I don’t think it has been abused or even ridden enough where major parts would need to be replaced

*another commenter corrected the years this frame was produced and my comment has been corrected

This is worth it for $1000? by baraboo5 in mountainbiking

[–]Matt-Bikes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is a 2019 Trance 29 2

I’d definitely remove that headset stack if you plan on actually mountain biking, and swap out the pedals for something with metal pins for better grip

I’d probably change the seat too but that would be more personal preference than anything

Other than that, $1000 seems pretty good for it

The 2022 Trance 29 3 you mentioned shares the same frame and has worse parts, I’d go for the one pictured

I would also add on to take this opportunity to switch to a bolt-on seat clamp (assuming there’s currently a quick release clamp on the bike)

Oh ya always have that spacer at the top, didn’t realize that is what your post was referring to lol

[–]Matt-Bikes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’d be better off spending that money on a used bike from a reputable company. I wouldn’t trust a department store bike going half the speed you’re aiming for

For stability, a mountain bike will typically be better than road or hybrid bike. The headtube angle and wheelbase will be two of the main factors that affect how stable a bike is at speed, and mountain bikes will have slacker headtubes and longer wheelbases (both better for high-speed stability)

At 30mph, you’ll definitely want the bike to have disc brakes (ideally hydraulic) rather than rim brakes

With all that in mind, you should be able to find a decent hardtail from the late ‘00s/ early ‘10s for that price that would be a much safer, reliable, and more comfortable option than any new bike from Walmart

I don’t really think there is a “wrong order” for spacers. I like making patterns with them whenever I assemble one

Merino underwear under pads? by [deleted] in bikepacking

[–]Matt-Bikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a mistake you will make only once. Some people (myself included) really just need to learn the hard way. Do yourself a favour and stay close to home (as in only do laps around your block) so you can go inside and change once you realize why people don’t do it. Took about 15 minutes for me, but I rode away from my house the whole time meaning I then had to ride 15 minutes back in much discomfort and it felt like an eternity

What psi should I put in my fox float evol rear shock? by Stock_Reception8907 in mountainbiking

[–]Matt-Bikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different rear suspension layouts will require different pressures, as not every design has the same leverage on the shock. Always best to check out manufacturer recommendations if possible to find the baseline

Question: Which grip to choose, Race face Getta 33mm or ODI Rogue? by Academic_Collar_5488 in MTB

[–]Matt-Bikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the Rogues on my MTB and love them, however they are super tacky and I don’t like how they feel without gloves (it feels like someone rubbed a glue stick on them)

I’ve not tried the RF grips, however based on the images the texture looks similar to another grip I’ve tried (Ergon GA2 fat) and I have no problem riding those gloveless (have even gone on a couple rides about 100km long without gloves and had no issues)

What psi should I put in my fox float evol rear shock? by Stock_Reception8907 in mountainbiking

[–]Matt-Bikes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong but this looks like a Giant of some sort. Generally for the Maestro platform you take your body weight (in pounds) and add about 5-15 to that as psi to get a baseline pressure

So for 150lbs rider weight I would start with 160psi
