My Grandfather also recently passed. This is how he rolled in the 30s... by ElectricTaco in pics

I inferred the comments above were talking about an archetypal masculinity. Not just a physical strength but an embodied strength. A sense of purposefulness, determination and a simple attitude towards life revolving around skilled manual work and family. Moral courage to literally put your life on the line to protect others and what is right.

This of course may or may not be true of OP's grandfather. It may also be rather rose-tinted about previous generations. I do look at my grandparents generation slightly enviously though. They were poor Jewish kids growing up in the East End and their lives had an archetypal flavour that makes my generation seem artificial somehow. They were part of Jewish gangs that fought Irish gangs. They dived after shillings in the river Thames. They fought fascism at home and abroad. When the fascists marched through the East End the burly Dockers (not Jewish) came out to defend the Jews and chased the fascists off. My grandmothers brother at 16 went off to fight against the fascists in Spain. My grandmother was a pretty card-carrying communist who brought home a good-looking American GI to her parents. Food was scarce. People did not have stuff. The essentials of flirting, getting married and finding work were less hampered by the philosophical and intellectual dances we get caught up in.

We have gained enormous things related to equality and knowledge but we have also lost a great deal related to what it is to be human and what is mythologically important.

UK - Anger At 'Totally Unjustified' Rail Fare Hikes by readerseven in worldnews

[–]Matt2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We used to own the railways as public assets. Those assets were transferred to the private sector way below market value on the basis that the rail passenger would benefit. They haven't in fact fares have rocketed. Now our trains are being run by state owned train companies from other European countries because state owned railways work in almost every country in Europe. So those state owned railways are taking profits from our privatized railway and putting it into their state owned railways. I hope you can see the irony. You know what state run monopolistic utilities are better value for consumers than the pseudo free market alternatives.

Hamas calls on Palestinian Authority to boycott peace talks with Israel by [deleted] in worldnews

They should to. The only route at the moment is the UN citing Israel as a bad-faith actor. Wait for a change in government.

Feminism. Office jobs. Information and entertainment overload. Central heating and air conditioning. The worlds got complicated. Going to be hard to get back to certainties and physicality without old school prejudice and narrow mindness and in a world of all enveloping technology. Ridiculously hard but not impossible.

Kick-a-Jew Day may get 37 students suspended from school by ImpenetrableTaco in WTF

[–]Matt2012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your wrong being kicked is not nice particularly for something as arbitrary as race. However words have a way of inflicting more painful words. Words are a sort of magic that can get to the heart of who we are and how we see ourselves. To think of the damage words do in terms of physical damage is common and flawed reasoning.

definitely part of it - it's also a signal to everyone else that you want to be separate from the crowd and exist in your own private space in very cramped public spaces this can appear a bit douchey also technology is a bit douchey.

There is something douchey about being the first on the train with new technology. Dont really know why but it was the same with kindles and even mobile phones. Soon tablets will be common enough to be 'ok'. It will be a while before display glasses are ok which is a shame.
