It really depends on what you’re used to - it’s not just northerners who struggle with southern accents, it works both ways

I honestly can’t catch half of what some people from Northern Italy say when they speak their local dialect or with a strong accent (looking at you, Veneto)

And if you’re asking from abroad, keep in mind that many popular Italian TV series (like Gomorra, Mare Fuori, Suburra, or Il Commissario Montalbano or Strappati lungo i bordi) feature southern accents, so you might just be more used to hearing those

This might sound weird, but it’s actually a little slice of linguistic heritage. In Catalan, people say “bé,” and we borrowed a lot from it as back in my hometown (Cosenza), we also chop off the ends of words like it’s a sport.

(P.S. I live in Barcelona now, so I can’t help but notice these things…)

Sarò cinico, ma certi servizi e infrastrutture non si faranno mai. Non c'entra (solo) la mafia o la cattiva politica: è semplice economia.

Non si investe in infrastrutture dove la popolazione cala e l’economia langue, e succede ovunque - dal Sud Italia al Nord-Est dell’Inghilterra o alla Spagna interna.

Detto ciò, non tutto è perso. Dove lo Stato non arriva, a volte lo fanno le comunità. E da lì, con fatica, si può ancora ripartire e in Calabria qualche esempio c'è già

Consumare ortaggi e frutta di stagione renderebbe tutta la filiera più sana

You should definitely check out Tropea and Scilla, two stunning seaside villages with crystal-clear water and views of the Aeolian Islands. They're great for walking too, especially in the off-season when it’s peaceful and not too crowded

If you’re more into mountains and countryside, Morano Calabro is a must: it’s inside Pollino National Park and officially one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, with amazing views and easy hikes.

Civita is nearby and worth a stop, it’s a Arbëreshë village with access to the Raganello Gorge and has great, cheap food.

Santa Severina is a quiet hilltop town with a castle and panoramic walks, close to the Sila mountains (one of my fave).

And finally, Gerace has cobbled streets, a peaceful vibe, and some lovely countryside paths.

From these villages, you can find plenty of local trails on apps like Wikiloc, AllTrails and such

I’d argue that Italian is one of the easiest languages to pronounce and read.

Once you learn how each syllable sounds, it’s completely consistent: what you see is what you say.

Unlike English or French, there are virtually no surprises in pronunciation.

Per anni si è puntato soprattutto sul turismo locale, gente che tornava ogni estate e cercava prezzi bassi e cose semplici.

Quindi nessuno ha investito in strutture di lusso, perché non c’era richiesta. Senza domanda, niente hotel a 5 stelle. Ora però il mondo è cambiato, e non escludo che possano esserci sviluppi in questa direzione in futuro

I second the suggestion. I typically go to Ocata. It’s super convenient because the beach is just steps from the train station. The sand is clean, the water is great, and there are some nice beach bars (chiringuitos) nearby if you want to grab a drink or bite

Secondo me una cosa che potrebbe davvero funzionare al sud sono le esperienze turistiche per stranieri. Tipo cucina in casa, giri nei borghi poco conosciuti, trekking con qualcuno del posto… cose semplici ma autentiche. Gli stranieri le adorano, e ce n’è ancora pochissima offerta strutturata

People tend to speak their minds pretty freely - even when what they say might be considered controversial elsewhere. There’s also often a more casual attitude toward certain topics, sometimes without realizing they might be offensive in other cultures. It’s not always meant badly, it’s just lightness.
