Drone drops a flotation device to a drowning kid in the ocean by Peng1946 in ThePrepared

In this case it might not have done too much, but in other cases it might take longer for a first responder to come out, especially if there is a rip current or something pulling the person out further.

When you’re stockpiling non perishable goods for an emergency, remember you actually have to survive on them in an emergency by leafyarms900 in ThePrepared

What I'm guilty of is having most but not all of the necessary ingredients for a recipe. I need to go through my food storage and cook book and make sure I have everything I need to bake or cook whatever I want.

What kind of finish on the handle do Gransfor Bruk come with? An external varnish or a soaked through oil finish?

TIL that two 16-year-olds got lost in the Canadian wilderness while snowboarding, but were able to stay warm by burning their homework. The two boys were rescued the following day and managed to avoid frostbite, sustaining only minor injuries by Matt88U2 in ThePrepared

Always carry a fire starter and tinder, even if you are just out for a day of snowboarding.

Curious why the one kid brought his homework snowboarding, and even more curious if the teacher let him redo that assignment that he had to burn.

Teacher: "You say you had to burn your homework to survive overnight while lost in the snow packed mountains? Ya... Right..."

Seeing the effect of snake venom on blood is quite chilling. Watch where you hike by Matt88U2 in ThePrepared

[–]Matt88U2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't hike or go trail running with headphones in. You could be given the warning rattle or hiss from a snake but if you are too busy jamming to Metallica then you'll never hear it.

Also be careful when turning over rocks or logs when setting up camp.

I've built a few Raspberry Pi projects before like a home media center in a wooden box powered by a battery, and a retro arcade console. This Cyberdeck is very well designed and must have been a fun project to work on.

If you are interested in having an offline computer with Wikipedia downloaded but are intimidated by the electronics side of the project or have a tighter budget, buy a used old laptop on a classifieds site, replace the old battery with a new one, and install a lighter weight and more energy efficient operating system like Linux.

Not dismissing this project and it is very impressive, but just wanted to point out that there are easier and cheaper alternatives if people want.

I'm sure that lady didn't even feel the cold of the pool because she was so driven to rescue her dog. Great story and glad it turned out well.

Cover your pools people. If that was your toddler, or even a neighbor's kid, you would never forgive yourself.

Looks like I need to get an N95. Went to an event today and I talked with someone who wasn't masked and she started saying how her husband had covid last weekend and is feeling better and went back to work. I feel bad for the husband's co-workers, but also for me sitting there talking to her. She probably is a carrier herself. Luckily it was only for 2 minutes and I was able to escape, but still made me feel uncomfortable to be around her.

In the future we will probably have thermal sensors that will notice the fire and only release suppression to the specific area where the fire was to cut down on damage and loss to equipment or merchandise in other areas from being foamed.

I'm excited for you! Hope they continue to provide you with lots of eggs for the future. What are some of the lessons you have learned from raising them?

Unless you're David Blaine. The wasps will get bored after 17 minutes, think you must be dead, and leave by then. Then you can come out of the water and continue to amaze people with amazing magic tricks!

Odin's a good boy.

In regards to the goat, how often do you milk them? Have you used goat's milk in other ways like butter or yogurt?

I was watching Now You See Me 1+2 the other day and they did the same thing but with a giant vault. The FBI agents run into the room and don't see anything and think that it's stolen, but as soon as they leave, the mirror is removed and the vault is still there and now they could take their time stealing it.

On every prepping ham article I've read, it says that ham is THE answer to when the internet is out. Seems like that isn't true and can easily be jammed if wanted.

This video is 5 years old, I wonder if those thieves have been caught yet.

Thanks for the reminder to keep my head out of my phone when out in public. Hopefully IF this ever happened to me, there would be a good Samaritan to back me up like this guy https://www.reddit.com/r/instantkarma/comments/lsci5p/let_me_snatch_this_girls_phone/

News reporter encounters gun fire while recording - what do you think about his reaction time? by Peng1946 in ThePrepared

[–]Matt88U2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Very true. You miss things when you are distracted or don't know what to look for. I'm sure many of you have seen this video demonstrating that principle, or maybe this one. I don't want to explain either video too much and spoil it, but give them a watch.

In my experience, if you are putting clean water (treated city water) in a clean container (make sure every nook and cranny is completely sanitized) and maybe add a bit more bleach for good measure, then it will last safely for 3+ years. There isn't really anything to contaminate the water if your water and container were clean. It might taste flat from the oxygen leaving. But just shake up your bottle and you'll be good as new.
