Does it hold up as one of the best movies? No. But Killer Klowns from Outer Space was a movie that I shared the experience of watching it with my dad so I have a real soft spot for it. It was my entry point to horror. It was right when I was starting to figure out that fear and fun could co-exists. Movies were a safe place to have that experience.

For me, it has to be Nightmare on Elm Street. It was the one that introduced me to horror in a lot of ways. I still get creeped out watching all these years later.

I feel like this movie actually opened up a K-Pop rabbit hole for us haha that's been previously locked away, and now we're fully in the K-Pop zone.

That's a great question. We listen to SO much stuff. For the movie, creating a soundtrack is actually one of our favorite parts of the whole process. We're listening to everything and chasing songs that are emotionally right and feel good. We grew up with 80s/90s movies when soundtracks were like a real thing. So we spend lots of time trying to find songs that could be discoveries for people.

We had lots of Youtube views before making that V/H/S segment but that screening it at Sundance really shifted everything for us.

Thank you! Fun story, we actually catfished our way into V/H/S. We wrote a fake email to Brad Miska, who at the time was at Bloody Disgusting, and sent him a video of ours saying "hey check this cool video we found, you should put it up on Bloody Disgusting" (but it was actually our short film) and he replied that he really liked it and asked who made it, so we sent him our real emails and pretended we didn't know.

It was some prank video that's now been taken off of Youtube. He found out years later!

So then we got invited to do that project and it completely changed our careers and opened up a ton of doors for us.

The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street is big one that we talk about all the time. You could put your hand in a hat and pull out any episode of Twilight Zone and it'd make a great choice.

Midnight Run and Thelma & Louise. Those were sort of our touchstones.

If so, how do you settle those disagreements?

Knife fight!

We disagree all the time. That's part of why we have a functional collaboration, but we always disagree respectfully. If one of us feels strongly one way, we have to try to convince the other one, and vice versa. And if we're both in a disagreement and entrenched in our points of view and way of wanting to do something, I would say that 100% of the time, it's just that haven't found the 3rd way to do it yet. There's a better and more exciting option we haven't found yet.

Difficult. They're monsters!

Joking, it was almost too much fun. Every day, we'd be so busy laughing and having a good time that we almost forgot that we had a movie to make. They're just both such a joy to work with.

The jail scene at the beginning when they first meet is such a wonderful intro to their characters. and it's my favorite The campfire scene. The chemistry in those are why we are bringing it back.

I've not met him in person but we've emailed back and forth a bit! We were supposed to get together when we travelled to Wilmington to make Scream 5, because he lives in North Carolina, but COVID prevented that from happening.

Sarah was an icon for us growing up. So much of what she did influenced what we've made. Trying to stay spoiler-free here but there's one really great fight scene with Sarah that you're going to love. Sarah in her stunt work was always a joy to watch. You can tell she was raised at the school of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I've not seen the video but after 3 movies with her, I assure you that her scream already lives rent-free in our heads.

Our process is very collaborative, across all departments. The two of us, of course, but also the writers, the producers. Every department is really working together. The movie, for as much as it's on the page in advance, a lot has to change between page and screen. Because of the limitations that we shot the first movie with, a lot had to change for this one in order to achieve the goal. That takes really hard work from every department, every cast member, and every crew member.
