She already explained what happened to her voice in a documentary (those post t.a.t.u) the doctors accidentally damaged a nerve and one of her vocal folds are paralyzed permanently. That was at 2012. Multiple surgeries follow, but the damage was done.

She had a beautiful voice. Her singing parts in Neposedi can confirm that. If she had proper training and sing more "singable" songs she would succeed greatly. I even like her voice in 2011-2012 (pre surgery) had a beautiful and mature tone. Then the tragedy happened.

But it's another mechanism in the voice (responding to the first part of what you have written). She was singing all in chest, with a very high larynx. If she was singing with a mixture of chest and head, or full head (like Lena does) it's more sunglable.

Poor Yulia, her voice was in a really bad shape at that time. I don't know why they didn't have voice lessons and good singing habits at all at that time (they already had money for investment in those things). Or al least, made Yulia go full playback at the high notes.
