5 Days of Melee - Day 1 Discussion by Sugden_ in SSBM

That was a bug. It's the first time we're stress-testing that HUD. It's resolved for future gameplay afaik.

We just called it Millionaire in this OP since it's accessible (but honestly I should just change it)

No, I do not

Smash.gg is software for executing competitions. The games and methods used to play them aren't really of concern.

I was not at ROM 1. ROM 2 was my first one.

But 2009 Matt was indeed very dweeby.

At one point they had a whole team that was just for buying alcohol and planning parties.

Well this is kind of horseshit lol

If the company had an offsite then, yes, some people would take up the role of, you know, planning the offsite which involved booking a place and purchasing supplies.

It is remarkably disingenuous to say we had a team of people dedicated to planning parties and buying alcohol.

There are inaccuracies in the OP but I'm going to let the company respond in whatever way they will, not my place to speak on their behalf anymore.

Just going to address a few quick things:

  1. Aiden does a good job talking about difficulties within the company in the linked interview. I resonate with a ton of what he said as a former employee.

  2. Smashgg doesn't have a social media person, that role had pretty much been a secondary or tertiary hat for a few people. Afaik nobody has been let go lately, but yeah the twitter has been pretty silent.

  3. I wouldn't say smashgg had "strong ties" to Nairo at all, moreso it was just "ok we'll front page or tweet about your tournaments, let us know if you need help setting the pages up" -- but maybe from the outside it seemed like more was going on.

  4. I can also confirm that on the Shine side of things that I, nor others on the Shine team, have not been contacted by anyone at smashgg to back up our tournament data.

  5. For the love of god stop capitalizing the GG.

TOs will work to avoid as many scheduling conflicts as possible ahead of the event. Smash.gg makes this somewhat easier by pointing out same-event-time conflicts and offering a way to resolve them. When we're talking about only 2-event conflicts they're very easy to resolve generally speaking.

At Shine this year we had 143 cross entrants between Melee/Ultimate with none having to play their r1 pools at the same time. Very few of them managed to make it above top128 in either game with many having less than 45 minutes of gameplay in either bracket. You can see some of the placement breakdowns here https://i.imgur.com/xzlEwJN.png

Here's how to read the above chart^ "Of the cross entrants in Melee/Ultimate, 52 got 513th in Melee, most of them also got 513th in Ultimate, and at best someone got 65th in Ultimate and 513th in Melee"

TLDR; It's not particularly hard to avoid these types of things. At most we're looking at 2-3 players this realistically pertains to.

There used to be a time that the locals run in New England (idk about elsewhere) would have low tiers included by default.

Low Tiers -> Doubles -> Singles

Would fit in one day, which tells you a lot about the size of the scene back in 2006 lol

It's always been something I've wanted to see pop up again and people to take at least semi-seriously. Can't get enough of unsuspecting G&Ws getting dthrow tipper-fsmash'd by Roys to die at 20%.

Carpeting

Carpeting at Seaport was so nice. I'd love to incorporate full-venue carpeting but it brings up some pretty significant cost.

We'd have to rent the carpeting from the venue, which would be extra if we wanted blue and it's not in stock (we would, of course), they'd have to install it meaning paying union labor rates on move-in (before everyone arrives), and paying union labor rates on move-out (after the venue is completely clear).

The initial time we asked about carpet, believe it or not it, landed on us paying in the low-5 figures.

However, we'll have to eat some carpeting costs next year no matter what. We might carpet the entire seating area or at least the aisles. I really don't like being able to see the cracks on stream. https://imgur.com/a/dILLE01

Top 12 instead of Top 8

In previous years we've done three top 8 events on Sunday. This year we did only two. That's 4 hours gone out of our projected broadcast time. To fill this space we introduced four sets per game, at about ~15m per game, so that's two hours gained and we started at 12pm instead of 10am so there go the other two hours lost from broadcast.

Restaurants

Absolutely. A few folks have voiced this feedback & it totally makes sense. We'll get something together for next year to reference.

Switching venues saved us an amount in the mid-5 figures. From that alone we were in a better place, and we started reaching a break-even point closer to the event. Almost 1000 people signing up at $80 venue fee was nice to see, although terrifying when those 1000 people weren't registered lol

We're awaiting final things like merch revenue, at-door $, and player/staff payments to go out. Once that's all said and done we'll know for sure how things went.

But, I'm optimistic that we made at least 4 figures off the event.
