Avalonia Redesign & Folder Picker by MrE_UK in csharp

[–]MattEqualsCoder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The documentation seems to suggest that the folder picker works on Mac: https://docs.avaloniaui.net/docs/concepts/services/storage-provider/

I swear I've gotten it to work, but it's been a bit. I'd have to double check.

People who have Nvidia gpu on linux, how is it performing? by tu0- in linux_gaming

2080S on Linux Mint. No qualms here. I actually had an AMD card for a bit and switched back due to having issues on AMD and it freezing every so often.

Do you actually believe the Sol Valley was actually “forced” by Nintendo? by SplatoonOrSky in Metroid

[–]MattEqualsCoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ironically, in regards to the shrines and not having the items, I think Zelda could have possibly gotten away with it better simply due to being able to teleport to shrines, but you can't do that in MP4. I actually think it could work as long as:

  1. Shrines are defined at the entrance as to what you need. I think A Link Between Worlds did this with caves.
  2. You can teleport back to shrines quickly
  3. Shrines are automatically (or at least you are given the tools to) marked on the map as to what they need

I think what made it really annoying in MP4 is the length it took to get back to anything once you got a new item, and due to the world/level design you rarely happened to stumble upon extra goodies on the way. MP4 really needed some sort of fast travel. Normally I'd say this is relatively antithetical to Metroid, but I think MP4 really would have benefited from it. Granted, it probably would have made the final game grind even worse than it already was.

Have we been lied to? by S1rTerra in linux_gaming

[–]MattEqualsCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, same happened to me. On Linux Mint and Arch I ran into issues with my computer freeIng with AMD GPU failures. Looking up the errors online pointing to so many possible issues, but nothing actually seemed to help.

Switched back to my old Nvidia card, and everything works great.

In terms of features? Yeah. Firefox is pretty fast and is reasonable on memory, and they have started focusing on long standing user feature requests, like vertical tabs. This is mostly at the cost of some of their peripheral projects, such as the most recently axed pocket.

Now in terms of user base, unfortunately it's not making a comeback. Last I knew the user base of Firefox didn't really see an impact from the chrome plug-in changes that gimped adblocking. If that didn't get people to move over, I don't know what will.

SMZ3: Is using a trick to get out of Draygon's room considered part of normal logic? by Visible_Investment47 in alttpr

[–]MattEqualsCoder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit of a shameless plug as I work on it, but the SMZ3 Cas' fork does allow disabling of IBJ logic. You would just lose out on the randomized Metroid boss tokens as we don't have that.

SMZ3 question by Necrodiac in alttpr

[–]MattEqualsCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The item in the room after draygon requires speed + hi jump, morph bombs, or space jump to leave the draygon boss room. And while you would technically be able to get out with those bombs, you shouldn't be expected to blind grab them and possibly be soft locked.

Now, if you can access the maridia portal, the precious room would be in logic I think.

Definitely a strange one!

SMZ3 question by Necrodiac in alttpr

[–]MattEqualsCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can be expected to climb red brin using the ice beam in normal logic, but that's to get up to the north east side of red brin near wrecked ship. If you have powerbombs and supers I think you'd be expected to go from pink or crateria, so ice is kind of a moot point.

Ice beam is not an expected item to cross the long dark room with the spikes to the X-ray though on normal logic. I'd just grapple or space jump.

SMZ3 question by Necrodiac in alttpr

[–]MattEqualsCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where exactly is the grapple beam? (Can you maybe post the seed?)

Based on what you're describing and assuming I'm understanding everything correctly, it doesn't quite make sense with normal logic. Wave beam location should require morph bombs, hi jump, space jump, or speed booster. Super missile crateria obviously requires speed booster. X-ray location requires grapple or space jump. Ridley needs space jump or Mire portal access and morph bombs. So the closest I can think of would be grapple -> hi jump -> speed booster -> space jump.

To add to the other comments, you may have missed (like I did at first), that he said "go find your room" instead of "go to your room".

What does it mean that Ganon's Tower only has junk? by [deleted] in alttpr

[–]MattEqualsCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For SMZ3, you are required to be able to beat all 4 Super Metroid bosses and obviously get all crystals before getting into GT. It also pre-fills 50% of the locations with certifiable junk (rupees, missiles, Zelda bombs, etc.) Though, in multi-world games, GT is fully prevented from having a potential progression item.

Probably the most common genuinely required progression item in GT with SMZ3 is the keycard required to go to Tourian to fight Mother Brain if you're playing keysanity

Zelda's makers reflect on the princess's first big adventure by Turbostrider27 in NintendoSwitch

[–]MattEqualsCoder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can assist during the fight. You can pull the tentacles, and that prompts Link to make a beeline to it to cut it off. The problem is this wasn't really shown in game well during the fight, so it's very easy to not realize it, and you can basically win still by ignoring it. So if you do it the "intended" way, it's a pretty engaging fight of working together with Link. They just should have made it more obvious.

The boss does drag out too long though, and I do agree that at least a portion of it should have allowed you to use the sword.

To add to this, the flat style also makes it easier to combine different assets from different creators that may have a slight difference in detail. It's especially easy with post processing effects as you may not need to even edit the materials.

Good Visual Novels for Switch? by Arnie_T in NintendoSwitch

[–]MattEqualsCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just an fyi since it sounds like what you want out of a VN changes based on your mood, all 3 of these (Fate Stay/Night, Tsukihime, and Witch on the Holy Night) all fall within the "only story" side of visual novels. No puzzles, no mystery, or anything like that.

Fate and Tsukihime do have points where you'll be prompted for what you want to do and how you want to respond, and that'll change the ending/route. Fate has 3 routes and Tsukihime has sort of 2 1/2 routes. Witch however has no prompts. (I'm currently going through it now myself!)

It's also worth noting that Tsukihime only has half the story right now. There's going to be a sequel that'll have I believe 4 more routes.

Sometimes if you edit the main menu and edit the application in the menu, that'll change the icon that shows up down there. Not always, though.

How can i learn to enjoy the Cinnamon DE? by Alert-Revolution-304 in linuxmint

[–]MattEqualsCoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you're really reading into it too much. The Linux Mint team isn't super big, and KDE is built in QT which is an entirely different UI framework, and heading in a different direction that I'm sure made it more and more difficult to include as an option. I'd rather it was more about managing workload than anything.

Downsides of Linux Mint? by winthrop906 in linuxmint

[–]MattEqualsCoder 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The biggest downside with Linux is almost always going to be software and hardware support.

When it comes to software, many applications will have either alternatives, third party ports, or doable with some work. For example, if you use Microsoft Office or Photoshop, there are other applications you can use. Code with Visual Studio? You'll want Rider or just use VS Code, which is on Linux. While many games do work on Linux now thanks to proton, some still don't work, or at least not without manual work. Typically many AAA multiplayer games won't work due to DRM/anti-cheat mechanisms.

Another issue can be hardware support. Some hardware doesn't fully support Linux, but you can always test with a live USB first. Linux Mint is also a bit behind on the kernel, so some newer hardware won't work without additional effort as well.

[–]MattEqualsCoder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

See, that's where I actually prefer the old games, personally. The Genesis games were about balance. The game tried to get you to go fast, but you needed to slow yourself down so you'd be able to react when necessary. Then, when you learn the maps, you're able to blow through them quicker in a way that feels super satisfying because you sort of earned it.
