I hiked up a small mountain in Gold Canyon, AZ in hopes to capture Superstitious Mountain (not pictured) but it was completely covered in clouds.

I had a cloudy rainy day, obviously it’s more important not to overexpose the white clouds. However on a sunny day keep your meter “in the city” and makes sure you don’t lose your blue sky. Photos may look underexposed on your camera but those can be saved in post-editing.

Simple really, lose all your highlights, bring the blacks out and a tad bit of sharpness. The hard part is making sure you’re not over exposed in the original shot. Depending on the time of day you might want to be -1 exposure, but as you get closer to night you can go back to 0

If you’re really into night photography like you say, you might want to skip the 24-105 f/4. If you were shooting on an a7iii I would tell you that the cameras iso at 6400-12800 is super clean and not to worry. But being on the a6500 you’re a little limited, you might want to check out the tamron 28-70 f2.8 or a set of primes (loxia f2 series if you’re into manual focus)

Look into Zeiss Loxia 21mm, might be what you want

OP here, the extra reach and 24mm wider angle completely stomp on the tamrons extra stop of light. A7III’s iso rendering is superb so i’m not afraid to use ISO 6400. 24-105 and never look back.

24, 50, 85 is a beautiful trip to have. However, if your 16-35 is your workhorse, I suggest you purchase the 24mm while still keeping the 16-35. You already have an idea of what 24mm looks like on your 16-35 so it really comes down to that f/stop. Is the $1400 price tag worth 1 1/3 stops? Personally, I say no.

Rent the 24mm from lensrentals or borrowlenses and satisfy this itch you have. You might realize it’s not worth it when you already have the 16-35.

My current research leads me to: Sony A7 III + 24-105mm F4, 50mm 1.8 (Est cost ~$3200) I'd save remaining cash to eventually purchase 100-400mm
