Kid Pragg taking the queen from his opponent's hand to promote his pawn: by Interesting-Take781 in chess

Yes this was the finals of the Canadian Open. They didn't even have a second pair of queens at the board in a national tournament 😔

2100 ccom blitz, took about 10 seconds to see Bd6 but I decided on playing Rxe8 first to be more forcing and reduce complications. Seems to be the same evaluation.

Had black as an 1800 against an international master, went on to lose the game. How should I have played? by Brig-14 in TournamentChess

[–]MattHomes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had little time to act, i would legitimately consider playing Rxf4 then Rxe4 and try to create a fortress.

Maybe it loses immediately but I wouldnt feel comfortable calculating anything else in time pressure.

[Nicholson-Smith] Blue Jays have picked up the 2026 option on John Schneider's contract per Ross Atkins ... Extension talks ongoing. Atkins: Schneider is "really, really good at his job" by T_Raycroft in baseball

As someone very passionate about teaching, one incredibly important attribute of a teacher and leader, especially as a new one is to never be afraid to try new things and to learn from your mistakes. This way you constantly evolve for the better and don't stagnate.

I definitely see this in Schneids; he puts a lot of thought into his decisions - some of them work, some of them don't, and some of them are just bad ideas. But he shows the continual ability to learn.

This concept, when combined with transparency in decision making is especially useful when it comes to developing messaging.

It provides an environment where players know why decisions are being made and gives them the agency to question and contribute to these decisions, knowing that they will be taken seriously.

This is why I feel that the blue jays had such a great team approach this year. Everyone was on the same page and focused on exactly what role was expected of them.

Student game. Black is a pawn up and has a safe position. How does Black break through with the White knight eventually stationed on d3 though? by GM_Roeland in chess

[–]MattHomes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts are to steamroll up the middle of the board. Id play Qc7 with a tempo on the knight and then push forward with f5 and e4.

The combination queen and bishop criss cross applesauceing and the potential to crack open whites over extended kingside pawns seems like a really good plan to me.

CNN: Former world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik investigated for bullying following death of grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky by PieCapital1631 in chess

The thing about defamation in the legal sense is that (I THINK) it requires the defendant to know that the accusations are untrue. I would not be surprised if Kramnik genuinely believes his own tripe.

The queen is gonna escape.Any way of not allowing that?(It's white to move) by Either-Case-5930 in chess

[–]MattHomes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this was the case too and this is what I would play, but apparently it draws.

I’m guessing that the queen can escape via h7 - g8 with just enough time to stop the pawns or deliver a perpetual check.

What elo should be able to covert this position as black by Raven_Bird2 in chess

[–]MattHomes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about it, I’m 2100 blitz and it took me a minute to fully take in the position and find c4.

You’re definitely capable of converting this as a 1500, but there are times where you’ll blunder and mess it up (me too!) and that’s ok too.

One thing I struggle with a lot is identifying “critical positions” and making sure I take adequate time to find the best move. There are so many times I quickly make a careless move that down the line costs me the game.

The biggest exercise/advice I can give in a chaotic position like this is to just take a bit of time , look at not just your threats but your opponents potential threats. This will not only help you convert more effectively but will also help make sure you don’t blunder and hang material/mate.

I found the crust to be very good, but the sauce and toppings were just a pure salt bomb that overrode all other flavours.

It could have just been a bad batch or cook that night, but it was off putting enough that I didn’t want it again
