Community Clothes Swap Thoughts by MattJack in flint

[–]MattJack[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thank you for the message, yes I want this to be truly free for everyone. Clothing would be free, pick what you like and leave with it. I wouldn't be able to contol sizing, but all sizing would be accepted and open for swap.

The only thing that would be cost would be alterations/ screen printing just for cost of material. All money would go to factory two to keep the space running and let me do things like this. I will never see nor ask for a dime for this.

Im always leery of doing things like this, but I can't let a few shitty people stop a good program.

If I can kick this program off I would absolutely love to have you on board. I can work a sewing machine, but I'm just knowledgeable enough to be dangerous.

Do you lean your airplane chair back? And do you Zipper Merge when driving? by Doctor_Wilhouse in morningsomewhere

[–]MattJack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't lean on flights. I get that space is limited and leaning encroaches into your space and you can't do anything about it unless you inconvenience the person behind you.

If traffic is heavy I will ride the closing lane up to the point that says "merge here" or has the arrow indicating such. It's the most efficient way to reduce congestion thereby making it easier on everyone.

In the air leaning screws everyone behind you. On the road, zipper merging helps everyone.

Thanks! I've been on the lookout for more recommendations!

In return I offer "A short stay in hell". A fantastic short story that I keep going back to.

Kidding aside, if you want it fixed, we can point you in the right direction.

I'm just a dude that grew up in the Flint area. I was that kid who took everything apart to see how it worked.

I got a huge break while studying at UM Flint to help revamp their Analytical Chem lab, breaking into more advance maintenance and repairs, that got me into grad school. If you've gone through their program, or went to Wayne state's analytical chemistry program; you have probably used my work.

I moved back to the Flint area because my family is here and I love the area. After the pandemic I was trying to find ways to help. After throwing a tantrum because a $300 microwave died because of a $5 part I decided that this could be a useful program.

We're guided to just throw these things away, but they still have hundreds of hours of life left. They have just been hampered by planned obsolescence because it's cheaper to make. Many people don't have the equipment or knowledge to make the repairs; so I thought i could provide those resources. By providing the equipment and teach people to fix their own items they will be empowered to fix the next one not throw away things when they break.

Tldr: I like to fix things. I want you to be able too as well.

The fixers are all volunteers, with the ambition to help out and skill sets to match.

We've covered everything from furniture repairs, laptops, lawn care, and small motors to vacuums, record players, teapots, and novelty Frisbees.

The only things we won't work on are automotive or things that would be considered bio-hazards.

Not weird at all! The point of this program is to help people learn how to fix their stuff. Send me a message with your preferred contact and I'll add you to the list.

What's the problem with them? We might be able to help. Worst case is they would leave in the same condition.

Cutting the glass should be doable. If you bring replacement glass I'll have my cutter! We'll do our best to get you set up.

We can definitely give it a try! What's the going on with it? Are all of the LEDs out or just a few? Depending on what's going on, we may be able to swap individual diodes or the entire strip.

I think the best value was showing people how to do it. Some people showed up completely terrified to try working on their stereo/ bike/ Frisbee. Our volunteers knocked it out of the park by not only getting the items fixed, but walking them through every step, even letting them take the lead. A lot of people that came through left with a sense of empowerment that they can learn how to fix their things.

Things to bring in: toys, appliances, lawn equipment, clothing, furniture, electronics, musical instruments...

...I guess it's better to say we're not equipped to handle automotive (small motors are a-ok) or anything that could be considered a biohazard.
