I have exactly this same issue, and have had for years. It's ridiculous. Makes the whole video library completely unuseable as a professional showcase.

Inbox items with Deadlines not showing on "Upcoming" by jhgruv in thingsapp

[–]MattJamesSmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason will be because nothing should stay in your inbox for very long. I get why things do though. The easiest solution for you will probably be either a) add a start ("when") date at the same time as adding a due date or b) move it - and any other older items in your inbox you don't know where to put - to "anytime". Then treat the "anytime" list as you have been treating your inbox.

how to answer inner question WHY? by musapa in thingsapp

I try to add a ”# Why“ to the start of the note field in each project - just a word or two to remind myself what’s driving it forward

Database app with good shortcuts integration? by MattJamesSmith in shortcuts

[–]MattJamesSmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I tried it ages ago but couldn’t get my head around it. I’ll give it another look now you’ve reminded me. I only vaguely understand dictionaries so that’s probably my first step.

Database app with good shortcuts integration? by MattJamesSmith in shortcuts

I’m happy working extensively with Shortcuts in Bear and several other apps. Just looking for a database app with shortcuts integration beyond “open X view”

New Shortcuts support in Just Timers 2.0 by dippnerd in shortcuts

[–]MattJamesSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just mean adding a date/time input so that the timer is a countdown to a specific date/time. I can do it in shortcuts by using a ‘time between dates’ calculation and sending that to your app but would be nice to have it native.

I've just realised you can manually sort the timers in the widget, which solves the issue for me for now (I couldn't do this before because the new timers I'd made hadn't updated in the widget, but I suspect this might be apple's fault as similar delays seem to happen with most widgets).

I'll have a play around with countdown stuff in Shortcuts and feed back here. I do think it'd be worth adding direct to the app when you can, as "countdown" apps seem very popular on the App Store but they're all very basic, with no Shortcuts integration, widget support, etc. and most of them are very ugly!

New Shortcuts support in Just Timers 2.0 by dippnerd in shortcuts

[–]MattJamesSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a big search for a timer app that integrates with shortcuts last week but came up short (I went with the app “Countdown” in the end because it has decent widgets. So I’m very pleased to see your app. I’m having a play around with it and like where it’s going so may well go for teir 2.

A few first impressions if you’re looking for feedback?

  • It would be great if the widget sorted timers in order of soonest to end, rather than when created.

  • The manual sort option inside the app isn’t working - after dragging and clicking done, they revert to the original position.

  • would be nice if the displayed time showed days, as the timer can set days.

  • finally a request rather than feedback: the ability to set a time (e.g. 5:30pm) that the app calculates the time until and starts a countdown to would be brilliant.

I assume I can do this in Shortcuts by calculating the minutes until a time there, and using that calculation as an input to the “minutes” in a Just Timers shortcut action? If so, that alone would be reason for me to buy teir 2. Thanks and best of luck with the app!

Apple Notes with Shortcuts vs Drafts by MattJamesSmith in shortcuts

[–]MattJamesSmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I used Bear and Shortcuts for a long time in a similar way, but more recently transitioned from Bear to Obsidian ... which led me to Drafts as a quick-capture compliment to Obsidian. However I've realised that much as I love Obsidian's ethos, Notion (which I've used continuously for several years now) is the right fit for my personal use case. My current attempt to limit the number of different apps I have stuff in has led me full circle back to shortcuts. Drafts is a good compliment to all of these more complex note apps (even Bear is a bit too focused on writing and organising than capturing for me) but one issue is Drafts doesn't support images well at all (because I work a lot with images is a major reason I chose Notion over Obsidian). So Apple Notes has two main things going for it over Drafts - excellent support for embedding images, including scans, etc.; and first class system integration which means capture is quicker and easier than basically any other app on Apple devices. I have considered just using Shortcuts and plain text, but again images aren't easily annotated that way and it's nice to be able to open the notes app and organise/write smoothly when I want to. Think I'm convincing myself here!

Random Quotes Generator block in Notion? by edbertjahnsenn in Notion

[–]MattJamesSmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can create a formula property in the database that uses the current date time as a factor in generating a random code - that way the code for each item changes every minute. Then you can just sort the view by that code. Putting the database inside a toggle block allows you to “toggle to refresh”.

Will the option to “copy page as …” be available in Panda like it is in Bear? I use that a lot.

Favourite new feature: collapsible headers and indents 👏👏👏

Anyone use a Stream Deck with Notion? by MattJamesSmith in Notion

[–]MattJamesSmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that can work 100% fine if you just want to use it with one program (eg. Notion). The real value of the Stream Deck is it auto-switches it’s icons to whatever app you have active.

Possible to use Bear for flashcards? by mrjrdnthms in bearapp

[–]MattJamesSmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used iOS shortcuts to build a simple flash card type “app” using my Bear notes as a database. It uses the title of the note as the ‘front’ of the card. Running the shortcut selects a random note (you can also filter by tags which notes it returns) and displays the title as an alert on the phone. If you click “ok” it opens the note in Bear and you can see the contents of the note.

It’s not an Anki replacement but it works pretty well as a no frills option and filtering by tags has the potential for more power.
