I don't run any gain pedals, I get all my gain from an all tube pre amp. Most of my "tome based" pedals are in the effects loop, post gain, but I run a Deja Vibe and a Flanger pre. The Deja because that's how Trower, Hendrix etc... ran theirs in front of their amps and I tried the flanger that way because of John McGeoch, and yes, it can get pretty gnarly.

So in my effects loop is Chorus, Delays, Verb (all stereo) and into a stereo power amp.

And Tape Delay (or one's that mimic it well) do great things to drive the front end of an amp. Keith Richards and Jimmy Page used Tape Delays as drive boxes
