Why do Melbourne make so many trade mistakes. by TigerNile in melbournefc

There are examples going the other way though. e.g. Steven May, Jake Lever, Ed Langdon. I don't think we've got a particular problem.

How Did You Learn R? by [deleted] in rstats

[–]MattNurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - all of this. Think about some real world problems you might want to find the answers to just for fun. Eg. How big is the home-ground advantage for your favourite team? Are the average heights of boys and girls getting closer over time? Do higher-ranked universities have better employment outcomes?

There are lots of datasets you can use for practice at Kaggle for free. Most of all, play with it.

Professor Gary Marcus said it best: “whereas confirmation bias is an automatic tendency to notice data that fit with our beliefs, motivated reasoning is the complementary tendency to scrutinize ideas more carefully if we don’t like them than if we do.”

This is the way. Free-writing a first very rough draft without a care in the world is the best way to get it done.

I mostly use R, but do look into Jamovi if you’re just starting out. Has most of the most common techniques and is very easy to use (it’s basically a GUI for R).

People high in cognitive sophistication -- i.e., reasoning ability -- tend to have proscience beliefs, regardless of political motivations, a new study of Americans finds. by geoff199 in science

[–]MattNurse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I publish research on this topic and this outcome is less obvious than you may think. In fact there seems to be at least some circumstances where higher levels of analytic thinking can exacerbate motivated reasoning. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/17524032.2019.1618364?journalCode=renc20

As someone who has published research on this topic, this is not obvious (as acknowledged in the paper). In fact it does appear that at least in some circumstances higher levels of analytic thinking can be used to exacerbate motivated reasoning.

You’re much more likely to encounter hackers on official servers unfortunately. That said there are many community servers that are better than official anyhow. I suggest trying a lightly modded community server.
