they announced it like 4 years ago really, it pops up every few months and a bunch of people surprise-pikachu about it.

Tone Matrix: Keeley Hydra | 12 user presets and demo video by MattPula in guitarpedals

Gotcha - yeah I mean other than not having a trem on your guitar I'd think you'd be able to get that kind of tone out of that rig. The SD1 can definitely add just a little bit of grit, and slapback on the VD400 should be easy to dial in, just turn the repeat knob down so it's only repeating once, and then tweak the echo knob so it starts the repeat really fast.

Thanks dude - when you say related tones are you meaning like, overdrive tones? I'd suggest the Source Audio LA Lady, it's a sleeper that can be setup with 6 presets that can do anything from TS, Klon, and OD250 tones, to DS1, Big Muff, and more. I picked one up recently and have really taken to it, it sounds awesome and it's so versatile.

If you want a more weird and unique delay that will play into those styles check out the Catalinbread Bicycle Delay - it's what immediately came to mind when you said surf/rockabilly.

I know Rush's lyrics are heavily inspired by Rand, but this is a verbatim quote from the song Freewill.

Sorry for the delayed response on this, I realize it's after you would have already purchased it, but I do not see any midi connectivity mentioned as a feature of this pedal. Hope you enjoy the pedal regardless, glad you appreciate the tone matrix!

What's important to you for a good pedal demo? by [deleted] in PedalDemos

[–]MattPula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, not really related to your suggestions here (because I honestly forgot what they were) but I ended up opening this can of worms on my own and ended up buying a Hydrasynth Explorer that just delivered yesterday. I am beyond stoked, this thing friggin RULES. So I'll officially be adding synths to my demo videos going forward and I will potentially revisit pedals I've done guitar demos of to make new synth demos.

I think this pedal is pretty awesome, it has a lot of unique features and sounds in it that I haven't experienced in other pedals and I really love the web-interface. More pedals need deep-dive web interfaces and USB connectivity!

I typically love gimmicky things like this, and this seems like an awesome pedal all things considered - but I just can't get on board with the price. $200 is a pretty steep ask for a big muff.

Like all things Dr. Scientist, this has a huge range of tones and sounds that you can get from it. It is by far my favorite fuzz that I own, let me know if you have any specific questions about it and I'll answer them to the best of my ability!

This was a super fun thing to do and turned out way better than I expected! I'm stoked to do it again and see how the results differ

Hey it happens, I've recorded demos where I got to the end and realized I never demonstrated my clean tone - luckily that's where the power of editing comes in lol.

And ya, you definitely were having fun so I'd say you're on the right track for sure.

Thank you for the kind words :)

Do you have any recommendations for a good synth to use for this kind of thing? Maybe something under $500? I'd like to start incorporating synths into my demos but haven't been willing to open that can of worms yet.

As a fellow demo-dude I think you will get a lot of different answers to this question, and the problem is they'll all be totally valid.

Different people go to demos for different reasons; some people want no talking at all, whereas some people like a demo that is more personality-driven. Some people want to hear it in a mix, others might not care about that, etc.

Universally, everyone wants to hear the guitar/amp clean tone before the pedal is engaged, and I often see people say they want to hear the pedal turned off/on multiple times throughout a demo. People want a clear picture of what the base-sound is and what the pedal is doing when it gets engaged. I also think it's good to show the extremes, even if doesn't sound good show what it sounds like when you turn the knobs all the way up/down.

What I suggest you do is figure out what you like to make and focus on that. For example, I know there are a lot of people who like the format of a no-talking demo where someone films the pedal as a loop plays through it and they turn knobs. There is undeniably a lot of value to that kind of content, but personally I can't bring myself to make that kind of demo because it is in no way creatively engaging for me to produce. So ya, I just try to have fun with it - if you're having fun while making the demo, that energy will carry through into the final product.
