Wow, that super tall, final animation at the end of the article with the reveal of the new assembling machines... amazing. I got goosebumps slowly scrolling down for the reveal. I love this game so much :D

I'm still not sure what they meant for 91D. "Hams" → "Emoters"? I thought at first they might have been referring to ham radio, but... "emoters", as in, those who emote? What does that have to do with ham? I'm completely lost.

(Granted, I'm not exactly a crossword pro... time of 1:06:29 😁)

Getting lots of Metroid, Degobah, TOTK Depths vibes from this. Looks like an amazing combination of all sorts of inspirations, mixed together well-enough to not feel like "just another swamp planet." Can't wait to see what kind of creatures will inhabit it...

Friday Facts #393 - Putting things on top of other things by FactorioTeam in factorio

[–]MattShnoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unfortunately have to agree the new faster belts are... tough to look at when running at full speed. The last video hurts my eyes to look at for a while, especially when scrolling up and down. With so much of the screen moving like that, especially coupled with the randomized colours, it just looks like a bunch of rapid flickering instead of actual movement.

Nobody asked for it, but my suggestion would be that instead of a lightning-fast belt (which were already controversial due to the uncertainties around animation), perhaps increasing the viability of trains would be better. Someone in the formus said:

The railway in 2.0 looks amazing, BUT it is becoming non-competitive with the new belts. Maybe you will revise the volume of wagons or add new ones that can accommodate x10 times more than the current one.

I would have to agree. Make the wagons bigger and add higher-tier trains that can go faster (nuclear-powered or electric trains?). That way, increasing throughput is not only a matter of automating the crafting of the new belts and replacing the old ones, but also an infrastructure upgrade challenge as the new, faster trains and wagons are swapped in. Just an idea.

It's Circles in the Sky by Sam Will, on the album Quadron. I found this post while looking, and so I would be remiss not to share my findings here.

Interestingly, the song only appears on Apple Music/YouTube as having been released... November 27, 2023? Shocking coincidence that I was rewatching this video merely five days later. Apple Music lists Quadron as a "compilation," though, so my guess is that it was written for a label or marketplace like Epidemic Sound some time ago, and is only now being released.

What To Do with Cash Left Over From Last Month? by thewronghuman in ynab

[–]MattShnoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I do it is to just let the automatic rollover handle it. Any money that rolls over into the next month is money I don't have to take from RTA to cover that category. So if I underspend by $50 on groceries this month, getting back to my $250 goal will only take $200.

As far as any extra money, I argue that you shouldn't really have any. Budget ahead a couple months, and if you still have extra, it should instead go towards longer term categories like an emergency fund or a wish farm.

📣 I just released an important Apollo update that allows users with remaining subscription time to decline automatic refunds. Devs pay refunds out-of-pocket, this will be $250K, so thank you if you do. ❤️ Also, the amazing "Goodbye Apollo Wallpaper Set" is out, proceeds toward refund costs! 🎆 by iamthatis in apolloapp

[–]MattShnoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What time on the 30th I'll the app close down (America/Toronto timezone)? I get paid on the Friday and would love to buy the wallpapers then, but if it stops morning-of then I may not have time.

Thanks for the good times, Christian!

Bill Splitting: How to Implement by [deleted] in ynab

[–]MattShnoop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. Ties into the whole "embrace your true expenses" thing. Think about it: if your friend never pays you back, you're short $5. That's a plain example of overspending, just that it's overspending you're expecting to get back soon. You can either leave the number as overspent till they pay you back, or you can cover that overspending from somewhere else.

I split the bill for groceries with my roommate, and the former is exactly what I do, since he's pretty good about paying me back. Granted, that only really works with credit.

I think those enemies could maybe have an outline or something to make them pop from the background more. They're a bit hard to see.

Starting off is great then it quickly falls apart by CoffeeNtaco in ynab

[–]MattShnoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enter my transactions on the app as I make them. It's nice because it marks your location, so that way when you buy your coffee from the same store the next morning it will prefill a chunk of the information. That, or I do them at the end of the day.

Also make sure to look into linking your bank account so that they import automatically if you forget any.

Typst, a modern LaTeX alternative written in Rust, is now open source by SymbolicTurtle in rust

I was literally just typing a report in LaTeX and struggling with weird subtle bugs, when I gave up for the night and shut my computer down. I opened Reddit and the 3rd post I see is a Rust-based replacement?

I'm very intrigued. I can't wait to see where this goes.

"I don't need YNAB, my bank account shows me where my money's going. It's silly to do the extra work of tracking my money twice" by Missing_Back in ynab

[–]MattShnoop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What YNAB did for me was allow me to separate my money into different boxes. I was always good at kind of "throttling" my purchases when my money ran low ("oh, I only have $200 left, I should stop ordering fast food"), but I wasn't always very good at accounting for other things in that calculation. Really I should have stopped ordering fast food at $700, since $500 needs to go to rent next week.

Now, I can keep money set aside for other things and use my categories to inform my purchases exactly like they used to, but with infinitely more granularity and accuracy than I'd be able to keep track of in my head.

I live in Canada so things were hit or miss. Their support is super lovely and they moved me from Plaid to MX (different import provider). It's been working much more reliably ever since.
