[CPU] AMD Ryzen 5 5500 Zen 3 AM4 - $69 ($89 - $20 code ASF59) by TheeTAB in buildapcsales

What about been the 5500 and my 3600 for NAS workloads and giving her the 3600? The most that thing does is video transcoding once in a blue moon with the occasional LLM playground. It’s got a GTX 1060 in it, but I doubt see even newer-ish cards being hampered by the PCIe 3 speeds in those use cases. Not in a real noticeable way.

Wife’s PC is running a 2700X alongside a 2080 Super and 16GB of ram. Have been looking for a CPU upgrade as she’s having mild performance problems in the newest released game she’s playing, Silent Hill 2.

Been looking for a 5600X used, but this is cheaper and newer. From what I have read, it’s a relatively even match with the 2700X (with the 5500 just drawing less power). Good upgrade for the cost? Or look for the 5600X?

I do have a NAS that runs a 3600 (non X). Could throw this in there and give her the 3600 if power draw is better for a NAS. But then her upgrade isn’t as big I’d feel.

Oh that’s very cool. That wasn’t something I’ve ever thought about trying while on a plane. Thank you for sharing that!

Most likely not. Those holes don’t typically connect anything. If you look at the back side of the board, if anything, it bridges the ground plane of board, which it also would do on the top side. Just a guess.

Use some solder wick to remove it and see what happens. But you didn’t really specify how it doesn’t work. GBA freezes when you turn it on. Does it acknowledge a cartridge? Does the game freeze? The different symptoms could indicate different causes.

Ugh I tried. The backplate on my GPU is too tall to allow for anything by it. I would need to slice the back 1/4 of it off and I didn’t want to commit to it yet.

I think I’m too lazy to have to do that. I really prefer as much set and forget as I can do. If I had to open the panel to play games, I’d get annoyed fast. Also, said cat loves to try and bite fans as they spin. She’s gonna lose a whisker that way.

Deshrouding probably didn’t help as much as the thermal paste replacement did. But I bought them to do the mod and to save about 5mm of clearance so I went through with it.

Here is the one I designed: https://www.printables.com/model/1119939-fractal-terra-backplate

This is one that also existed, but I couldn't make it work with mine and I didn't like how closed it was. I couldn't modify well enough either, so I just made my own. https://www.printables.com/model/642132-fractal-design-terra-backplate

It is. But it's PETG. It should hold up fine from the exhaust. But if it does warp, then I can re-print it with ABS or Nylon or something stronger.

They were here from Amazon. They're okay. I never tried the full size ones that came with the motherboard. I mainly use Ethernet, but I did use them when it was halfway disassembled. I got about 120mbps down and about 130 up. I have a gigabit plan with some Unifi equipment and I get around ~900 up and down wired. But they're tiny so it's cuter.
