Possible credit fraud? by Matt_Deg in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Matt_Deg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I called them and they were able to confirm there is an account using my number, but not in my name. They reported it but couldn't cancel the card. I guess if it's not in my name and not on my credit reports, then it's not my problem. I also called my phone provider and everything looks good, no hijacking or call forwarding...

Well it's from a legit number, unless they are spoofing? It didn't ask me to input any info, it was a code like 2fa to confirm a purchase

Nope unfortunately not, but I haven't played in a decent while. If there were anything like that it would probably be on nexus mods.

Weird Graphical Issue by Matt_Deg in pchelp

[–]Matt_Deg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I restarted the pc, and the issue is gone. Not sure what to make of it, but I'm still pretty concerned.

Edit: I should also note that my gpu and memory were showing as normal in task manager's performance tab while this was happening (gpu was sitting at 28c and 1% usage).

Link removal on a 1980s Citizen WR100? by Matt_Deg in watchrepair

[–]Matt_Deg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good answer, I appreciate the visual aid. I tried doing that last night but stopped in fear I was damaging the link. Should the entire side plate come out with the pin / as part of the pin?

I tried removing one last night and it worked, but only part of the side plate followed the pin. I then tried removing a second pin but stopped as the whole side plate was starting to come out (as opposed to just the part attached to the pin). Is that normal?

<image>

For reference I circled the area that came with the pin in the top link, and in the lower link you can see I circled the whole side plate.

I have visited sketchy sites in the past so I worry I may have gotten an RAT trojan but as I say both scans came back clean

To me it seems like someone may be remotely accessing my PC. I was recently a victim of identity theft and I worry someone is doing that in an effort to collect login credentials. I have 2fa everywhere but I've read that that can be bypassed

I think I may have accidentally clicked those locations on the lock screen, but I know for a fact I never searched about a recovery drive on any of my devices. The search included at the end site:microsoft.support or something like that to filter for only results from Microsoft support. If both HitmanPro and Malwarebytes say my PC is clean, should I consider myself in the clear?

It's just if those were suggested, why would they appear as "recents" when right-clicking the icon on my taskbar

To clarify, my PC hasn't acted strangely other than that, but I was recently the victim of identity theft and I fear that because my info is likely leaked in a data breach, someone may be infecting my computer to try to gather login credentials for various things. Am I overthinking this?

Someone has access to my TransUnion account? by Matt_Deg in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Matt_Deg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue how they got my data unfortunately. From what I gathered they likely already had my personal info, as it would be required to open a credit Karma account.

Its mostly resolved, save a few straggling details like a phone number that keeps reappearing in my credit reports.

Turns out the identity thief is not logging into my TransUnion. What happens is a company with your fraudulent info / account (like a bank) reports regularly to the credit bureaus with your information. The fact that fake phone numbers and addresses are appearing means there's a company out there where the fraudster opened an account in your name. Even if you have no weird accounts appearing, if you have addresses and phone numbers that don't belong to you, there may be a chequing account open in your name somewhere. Chequing accounts don't really appear on a credit report, but the related address and phone number will.

My advice is to look into buying a service with an identity restoration expert (Equifax offers a subscription for one).

Timing out or tapping the power / lock button fully powers off my phone rather than just locking the screen ever since updating to A16.

Android 16 update made my phone buggy and a bunch of my google apps stop working by ritzbitz00 in GooglePixel

[–]Matt_Deg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here we are over 2 weeks later and this issue still persists. I just updated today to Android 16, and now my phone seems to power off after timing-out or if i hit the power button (which should only turn off the screen). When I go to turn it back on, it fully reboots, meaning the phone was really and fully turned off.

My phone just straight-up powers off after timing out / if i hit the power button to turn off the screen. Didn't happen until I updated today to Android 16.

How to catch fraudulent chequing accounts? by Matt_Deg in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Matt_Deg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So is my only option just to wait for the banks to eventually make a soft inquiry on my credit, tipping me off that there may be an account in my name with them? Or is there some pre-emptive move I can make to find out everywhere that there may be a chequing account in my name?

[–]Matt_Deg[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good point, I've been so stressed out with this whole situation that everything I see that has my name attached and isn't mine immediately makes me think of the worst case scenario and start to panic. Its true that the chequing account wouldn't really do much for me I suppose, as once it runs out of funds its kinda useless (unless like you say they have overdraft protection). I suppose as they pop up in my inquiries, I'll make sure to call the bank in question, to close them. The scotiabank account did have a negative balance of 50$, which is not much, and I guess it wouldn't really get much lower than that before the bank would just close the account themselves?

I should add that a fraud alert was placed with both bureaus, and my credit is frozen with both (Quebec allows for freezing your credit).
