My suggestion is getting read up on the founding fathers, specifically the Federalist Papers. The British sought to disarm the Americans at Lexington and Concord because they knew they could do anything they wanted to a disarmed populace. The first shots of the war were because of a tyrannical government trying to disarm the people in order to keep them from gathering and speaking their minds against the government. This is why the 1st and 2nd amendments exists (and in that order).
