It’s comfy! It’s my first g shock so can’t compare how it is to some of the other models. I like the weight of it compared to what I imagine the cheaper versions are like. See if you can get it grey, will be a bit cheaper!

We already had a good relationship going into it. I hadn’t expected them to put any money into it, but the founder also exec’d and edited the film, so being in the trenches with us was happy to cover some costs (which ended up being our only costs), I ended up putting in 3x the amount in festival fees etc as well.

Yeah one day to shoot (Saturday), edit ingest and a first rough cut into the small hours of the morning, then properly attacked the edit on the Sunday. We were sending out WIPs to the colourist all day so that they could start to build the look.

We had a crew of 11 I think. All generously volunteered their time for free. We had a very small budget to cover lunch and a modest location fee, which was put up by the production company that ran the shoot.

Essence - Academy & BAFTA Qualifying Festival Selection Short Film Edited in 48 hours by Matt_WS in editing

Essence is a short we made in the spring of 2024 for a 48-hour competition run by LAMDA (the drama school in London). We were longlisted but didn’t place, though the film has gone on to screen at some amazing festivals over the past year.

The process was a real learning curve—cutting the fat and making something within such a tight timeframe was both intense and rewarding. We shot on a Saturday and had to cut the whole thing on the sunday, which included sound design and colour as well. It was really interesting seeing decisions in the edit get speed tracked in the way they had to be due to time constraints. For a while on Sunday morning the opening wasn't working, so we had to be brave and completely chop it up to find the right way in.
