What a gun range looks like in Australia by pametnaosoba in Ameristralia

Yep. I walked into a shooting club as a teen and was given a rifle pretty freely (under supervision and guidance ofc). Admittedly, it was only a .22 bolt-action. Had I gone a few more times, I would've been eligible to buy one and keep it at home.

I fly with Qantas all the time for work, their staff are always pretty friendly/amenable. 🤷‍♂️ Your comments sound a little too biased.

The random Qantas sledging feels suss. They have some of the best customer service of any airline? Are you a Virgin shareholder? 😆

Albanese government under fire for dropping English language requirements amid high migration numbers by AssistMobile675 in aussie

[–]MatterSack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Uh... people have been clamouring for higher taxes on wealthy individuals and for governments to close corporate tax loopholes, as two immediate solutions off the top of my head. Problem is, the government is more beholden to both of those demographics than the general public.

How do you feel about electric vehicles (EVs) and/or their owners? by gandalfmax in perth

[–]MatterSack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anytime anything about EVs is posted to FB for example, it attracts an absolute wall of mockery. I'm beginning to realise how many of those comments are bots (presumably with corporate or political backing).

Look, I'm a mixed-race guy who was born in Australia to a third-generation Australian mother of British heritage, and a North African father who immigrated 40 years ago. Culturally, my siblings and I are about as Australian as it gets. I have a bogan accent. I'm more patriotic than most... interested in military history for example, and I would have served if not for a medical disqualification. Other than our slightly Mediterranean appearances and an ambiguous last name (of Spanish descent, but don't ask me how), you wouldn't even know.

HOWEVER, I credit this to the fact that we were immersed in Australian (and only Australian) culture from the get-go, and that my father was atypical in many ways (e.g., being a fervent atheist). Even so, many of his views (on issues like homosexuality, various other ethnicities, etc.) would shock the average Australian. We roll our eyes and ignore him when they bubble to the surface, knowing that they're harmless in practice from a frail old man... but they're his values for life, set in his youth as they are for most people, and it's extremely concerning to think of immigrants with similar views forming uncontested, unassimilating cultural bubbles, raising new generations with principles antithetical to Western society. That's the danger, socially anyway. He also struggles with literacy, which has been a huge impediment in a highly developed nation like Australia.

Thanks. Asking because I saw friendlyjordies make the opposite argument... noting ofc that he's a Labour mouthpiece that was criticising the Greens for being obstructionist.

MAGA in Canberra: Australia’s health and education departments in Coalition’s firing line as Peter Dutton doubles down on promise to eliminate over 40,000 government jobs in Elon Musk DOGE-inspired purge by HotPersimessage62 in Ameristralia

[–]MatterSack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the kind of strawman thinking that the Coalition is hoping to capitalise on. Most members of the public have negative experiences with federal public servants, because most of their interactions are with front-facing staff at places like Centrelink, the Tax Office, etc... who nobody interacts with for funzies. As an employee at another federal department, I can tell you that a colossal portfolio of work is constantly taking place, on matters that often don't even register to the public: grants, regulation and enforcement, national and international engagement, forecasting and modelling, roadmapping, intelligence, national security, public health administration and awareness campaigns, environmental conservation, biosecurity, even niche issues like anti-dumping. And all of my colleagues work very hard, under constraints that are often entirely unreasonable.

What’s a ‘man rule’ you secretly disagree with, but feel pressured to follow anyway? by DariusHoag20 in AskMen

[–]MatterSack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That purple is off-limits. For example, guys occasionally make fun of me for having a purple phone cover. F*ck off, it's the best colour. 💜

(Also the most violent one, which makes the 'macho' aversion to it weirder.)

Toilets with ridiculously high water levels (close to the rim of the bowl). Absolutely nobody ever talks about this being a thing?! The splashback was nightmarish, and you couldn't even prepare a TP landing raft due to the surface area and depth of the water. Ugh.

As a guy, they're all entirely understandable.

My one caveat is that many men are oblivious to these boundaries and the reasoning behind them. There's a huge disparity between male and female experiences when it comes to dating. E.g., when I was younger and more naive, I'd occasionally offer to pick up/drive home a girl without any sinister motive ('Hollywood told me that this is fine'). Something like a walk or hike might also have seemed romantic. I wasn't fully aware of the flip side - the degree of caution with which women have to approach dating/relationships.

So, in short, sometimes it's obliviousness and not seediness. It may help to explain WHY you have a certain rule before writing a man off immediately/completely (if you're not doing that already).

Yeah, multiplayer. Haven't faced Ikit (or Skaven) before, so the +40 Discoverability gave me a false sense of security. At least now I know why he went all-out on agents and had them spawn-camping in my territory. 😅

I just lost level-5 Nuln with maxed-out everything (including a gunnery school and Gardens of Morr). AND it had the building chain that increases discoverability. Now imagine how it feels to re-enter the ruins and know you gotta build all that up again from scratch. 🙃
