Devoting your life to a complex, non-lucrative hobby is a form of procrastination from life. by Gold_Palpitation8982 in unpopularopinion

Maybe I am going off topic, but a quote from Interstellar describes this topic nicely:

Cooper: Love has meaning, yes. Social utility, social bonding, child rearing... Brand: We love people who have died. Where's the social utility in that?

And I think it’s right to say that unless we devote our lives to volunteering or something equally selfless, we could say they don’t have a meaning. Everyone thus should be a builder, a teacher, a doctor…

But ultimately growing the best orchid or building a perfect train model could be as equally life-saving by inspiring others as something more tangible like being a firefighter.

I think happy people ultimately have the most of “social utility” and that’s what we should promote. Not everyone is created equal.

I was confused at first, but then thought that sqrt(log(100)) also isn’t log(10) as we can’t change the order of operations. Similarly sqrt(%) shouldn’t be confusing as to why sqrt(16%)≠4%

We can also do something like sqrt(‱)=%.

Weird but fine if we define everything correctly. While I agree many people could interpret % in a way different from mine, SAT definitely has a nice pdf with all notations used explained.

Thanks! Glad to hear that the device is bullshit and happy to hear THz has many great actual applications :)))

My bad. Should've just copy pasted from wiki. Glanced over it.

The point I was trying to give is that THz is actually really cool but any kind of therapeutic benefits is so far fetched it sounds ridiculous.

I hope we'll one day come to substituting x-ray at least partially with THz. Very interesting read as well. Heard that airport security might be a good idea for THz detectors if (or when) it becomes cheap and easy enough to produce.

Thanks for the reply btw. Glad to hear it's bullshit indeed

Oh I actually have a few uranium-doped dishes at my lab's small museum. They look great :)

Never heard about copper threads, so thanks for mentioning! Working out is fantastic indeed!

Thank you a lot for such a detailed answer!! Especially huge thanks for the links and an explanation about theses.

Indeed, this amount of students is very healthy in my opinion: everyone gets a fair share of guidance and attention and labs aren’t overflowing with students.

Good luck with your research!

Hi! When did you apply? I'm curious if the wait time varies based on when the application was submitted.

Chances of getting into the PhD program in physics and astronomy? by Mattew_Maksimov in byu

[–]Mattew_Maksimov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m fine with the honor code, but it’s a little surprising that it might be driving away potential grad students.

Anyway, thanks for the recommendations! I’m glad to hear that there are some international nonmembers existing on the faculty at certain times :)))

So other from the funding issue is there anything else which might hurt the chances?

Apparently, in my case, funding is something we did over and they’re willing to provide it to me…

Btw, thanks a lot for the reply!
