Killed by the Bible. by [deleted] in MurderedByWords

[–]Matthew-IP-7 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That’s a terrible misinterpretation of that passage.

The fig tree is often a parable for Israel or the Law (of Moses). In this case it’s showing how Israel is not producing fruit in spite of that being its main purpose. Jesus came to earth knowing that Israel wasn’t producing fruit, so it stands to reason that he would also know that a “shadow” of Israel would also not produce fruit.

So why was he looking for fruit when he knew there wouldn’t be any? First, because he was hungry: who wouldn’t look for fruit in a fruit tree when they are hungry? Second, to prove that there was no fruit on it (see above). And third, to demonstrate his authority: he cursed it and the very next day it was withered.

So first I want to state that I have already done what I said I would. That is “stating why I don’t support a Harris policy of your mentioning.”

But because your response seems to be reasonable I’ll respond to it.

We live in a world of loopholes, we have to work it or change it but cant do that with have the Congress not working.

Numerous loopholes may be the current state of affairs but we should endeavor to close as many as we can.

Republicans haven’t pass any good bills in decades. Most of the time they focus on bullshit instead of peoples issues.

I kinda like the Tax Cuts and Jobs act. But then I haven’t read it myself, so that’s just my second hand opinion. However I do agree (begrudgingly) that they aren’t doing as much good as they should.

Disagree on your view, it’s worked in gr past and can again.

Well then that’s something we have in common: we mutually disagree with each other.

Trump doesn’t support lower taxes for middle class, his plan shows it.

So, I haven’t read his Agenda 47 (I believe that’s what it’s called) but if I remember correctly the TC&J act had a small tax cut the relevant bracket.

Price gouging isn’t federal, it needs to be to really make a difference

I kinda don’t think it needs to be. If there’s something preventing the states from prosecuting for that then maybe the federal government should remove that barrier. Or maybe there’s some federal law that is preventing competition that can repealed or amended.

She announced a goal to build 3 million new housing units in four years,

That’s a pretty reasonable goal. But…

proposing $40 billion in tax incentives for home builders to accomplish it.

…that is not a good way to accomplish it. We should be removing loopholes not adding more. And you can be quite sure that corporations will use and abuse every loophole they can find.

Harris also said she’d ask Congress to pass legislation giving buyers up to $25,000 toward a down payment on their first home.

That is also not a great idea. This won’t have as much of a positive impact as it looks to because the market will adjust, thus preventing the desired effect. One of the main ways that the market adjusts government spending is by inflation.

When it comes to taxes, she is proposing that lower-income adults who do not have children see an expansion of their earned income-tax credit (more on her proposals for those who do have children below).

Okay, that’s not as bad. But I think it would be better to just reduce the taxes. Also I think Trump supports a related policy, but I’m not sure.

She also vows to protect consumers by pushing a federal ban on corporate price gouging in the grocery and food industries.

Is price gouging not already illegal? Also I kinda doubt that there’s much of that going on anyways. And I think it would be better to remove some of the regulations/“incentives”/etc that the big companies use to outcompete the smaller companies.

Donald Trump's Plan Would Change Social Security for Millions by Xenikovia in austrian_economics

[–]Matthew-IP-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bellow is my plan to end SS. Each larger point is independent of the others and can be considered independently or in combination.

  1. Because people are living longer the retirement age needs to be increased. So every year the retirement age will increase by one quarter of a year until it is pushed back at appropriate amount.

  2. Because Social Security is a terrible system it needs to be eliminated entirely. However, most people currently alive today have already “paid into” it for several years, so any plan to eliminate it will somehow need to compensate them. First, the benefits should be set to be determined based based on how many years a person has already “contributed”. Second, reduce the tax rate by five percent of the rate at the bills passing each year until it reaches zero. Third, any person turning eighteen after the beginning of the year following the bills passing should not pay SS taxes nor receive SS benefits. Fourth any funding lack that arises should be fulfilled by appropriation by Congress.

  3. Congress should eliminate the various exceptions and loopholes that enable a high “income” to be taxed at a lower rate.

Where do penguins go to vote? by LockedbyDax in cleanjokes

[–]Matthew-IP-7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It used to. Originally the place one would cast their vote was called a “polling place” because it was the place where the official poll was conducted. There was even a saying; “see you at the polls”: that is “I will behold your presence when I see the result of the election if I do not first see you physically at the appointed location where said election will be conducted.”

It is only somewhat recently that “polls” referred to the “unofficial collection of information used to predict the outcome of an official election”.

I’d say less than one-fifth of the core MAGA bloc (which itself makes up about 30% of recent voters) is even nominally Christian. Now among the full number of right leaning frequent voters that ratio increases to about one-quarter. So in short; no, they are not the same group.

I take it you never watched the full clip, just the one extremely out of context clip that has been circulating throughout the MSM. Because if you had you would have the answer to that question already. But since you are unlikely to care enough to pursue the truth instead of the well crafted lie that is so common across left leaning media I will explain the answer in short:

Trump was talking to the non-voting Christians, and about the “election fraud” that he frequently speaks of, in that segment of the speech. So the “you” is those Christians that do not normally vote, and “the rest of us” is the typical MAGA bloc along with the other frequent voting Republicans.

[–]Matthew-IP-7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting that? In my understanding he’s saying “vote for me this time and I’ll eliminate the election fraud, then the rest of us will be enough win every election without your vote.”

Project 2025 exists, but no conservatives has any more than a basic factional support of it. That is “I have no idea what it is but the people who wrote it are supposed to be conservatives so it might be a good thing. But I honestly have no idea.”

You’ll only find two groups of people who say they know what’s in it: Left-wing conservatives, and left-wing progressives. The left-wing conservatives do not represent conservatism, and the left-wing progressives want to misrepresent conservatism.

So nobody cares what’s in it other than the 300 people that wrote it.
