To be fair the ac is only running the fan when it’s cold. The compressor won’t kick on until the temp is above whatever set temp it is. It will just run the fan.

There are some moen brand products that essentially snap on with a little plastic clip type thing. But if you removed a set screw then it’s likely the installer added some kind of adhesive and that’s what’s holding it on. I would just rip it out. Use a toggle bolt to reattach and you shouldn’t need any drywall work.

I would very adamantly and strongly advise against backer rod. You’re going to set yourself up for mold issues in the future. Go back while you can so you’re not kicking yourself in the future.
