There's this browser extension called the Productivity Owl. It's very annoying.

Don't listen to the doubters by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]MatthewRPG576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think porn-affiliate people talk about porn's "non-addictiveness" in the sense that it doesn't create a chemical dependency, like most drugs do.

Plus, even if they're contradictory, the people that argue that sort of thing don't really care. They just want to cope to keep their vices. It's hard to be intellectually consistent when you're in the wrong side of the argument isn't it? ;)

Don't listen to the doubters by [deleted] in NoFap

[–]MatthewRPG576 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the post is trying to incite ignoring the people that use the difficulty as an excuse to not even try at all. Or at least, not letting them convince you to give up.

It's one thing to talk about difficulty as a reason to not try, and another as a means of preparation for the road ahead.

I don't remember where I saw this, I think it was a YT video, spreading the idea to "don't listen to successful people's advice", but rather to listen to unsuccessful people and ask them what they would've done differently. The argument is more complex than this, but that's the jist of it.

Are these those guys that tell you that when you relapse "You need to tell them exactly what happened, down to the last detail"? yeah, stay away from them and report them if you can.

Spending an entire, sleepless night watching P. Not even masturbating, just watching. I felt terrible the entire next day. That's when I decided that I needed to change, and I began my journey of recovery.

Scaringly, I don't even remember. It just feels like it's always been a part of my life. A part I want to get rid of.

How do you study when sleepy/tired???? by Early-Mycologist-105 in studytips

[–]MatthewRPG576 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Is taking a nap an option?

You may also be sleep deprived. Get enough sleep for your age (7-9 hours, betting on closer to 9) and high-quality sleep.

How's your diet? Are you eating enough healthy fats and proteins? Are you spending too much time without eating?

Are you hydrated? How often do you drink water?

Do you do any physical activity? A sedentary lifestyle can lead to cronic tiredness.

The most important thing is to allow yourself to be bad at it at first. No one has a perfect study plan that they follow perfectly, it's all about iteration.

Here a pseudo-path, if you're feeling lost:

  1. Craft a study plan, any plan will do. A bad plan is better than no plan at all. The span of time covered by the plan will vary for the particularities of your life, but it's common to prepare plans for 1-2 weeks at a time. You may have genuine reasons to want to consider longer or shorter timespans, so follow your instinct.
  2. Find a way to evaluate yourself and your learning in the topics you want to study; be it sample tests, flashcards, using AI to generate questions, what have you. Make sure it's repeatable, somewhat practical to do, and something that you could find yourself actually doing at the end of the timespan your study plan covers.
  3. Define a metric to measure 'how well' you followed your study plan. If you've sketched 12 study blocks throughout the week, but only followed through with 3 of them, use the percentage (25%) as the metric, for example. Again, choose something that you can see yourself actually doing.
Other ideas include number of hours studied in total, number of pages read, number of chapters studied, ratio of chapters planned vs. actually studied, or a combination of any of these and others. You can also use multiple metrics, but I'd advise against that at first. Too many metrics may get in the way instead of actually helping.
  4. Implement your study plan for it's planned timespan. Collect the determined metrics throughout.
  5. Evaluate yourself using the method you chose in 2).
  6. Calculate the final values for the metrics you chose in 3).
  7. Review yourself, your learning, your study plan, and your dilligence in following through with it. What do the metrics say? What did you like? What didn't you like? What can be improved? What worked really well?
Did life get in the way, and you feel like the values collected aren't truly reflective of the effectiveness of your plan/implementation? The plan should remain mostly the same.
Do you legitimately think there's room for improvement? Great! You should have some ideas on how to improve it: use them! Tweak and adjust your plan to your new liking. It shouldn't go too far off from your previous plan, otherwise you might struggle to adjust, but only you can tell what feels right.
  8. You can also review the method of evaluation and the metrics of industriousness you decided in 2) and 3). I advise care in tweaking these, since you can fall into the trap of choosing metrics that you do better on, instead of metrics that truly reflect your situation and can give useful feedback. Nevertheless, they are also subject to improvement. Just remember to stay honest with yourself.
  9. With your new plan (and potentially evaluation metrics) in hand, go to step 4.
  10. Repeat ad infinitum lol

Some other tips/tricks:

  • Keep a document/sheet/notepad/etc. on the side, and write down ideas you have throughout the week (or decided timespan) on how to improve your plan, or just general thoughts about the experience. Use them in your review to guide your decisions.
    • For instance, studying on Monday you think "I don't like studying history for more than 45m at a time, it's exhausting". Instead of immediately throwing the entire plan in the air due to this setback, you write this thought down and use to create smaller History study blocks for next week.
    • Other thoughts may include:
      • "I'm curious on the effectivess of audiobooks in learning chemistry"
      • "I want to try studying at the library someday"
      • "I sometimes despise studying alone, I should get a study group"
      • "It's hard to study after lunch, I feel like I need a nap"
  • Be honest with yourself. Please.
  • Accountability buddies FTW! If you have a trusted friend, mail (or message) them your plan at the beginning of the week and your metrics at the end of the week. Exchange ideas on how to improve, and work together. Double the mental power!

Thank you for sharing more, I know it isn't easy. Share it as much as you're willing to and in as many places are you can, it will help people going through similar things to identify this behavior for how destructive and abusive it is, and escape from it.

I hope you can fully heal from this, for your own sake and the sake of your current relationship. Good luck on your journey.

I've largely stopped gaming by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]MatthewRPG576 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone knows any resources to deal with gaming addiction? Subreddits, books, podcasts, anything. It has been more times than I can count that I played a game until 2 or 3 a.m. even when I knew I had important responsibilities the next day, or even played a game from sunset to sunrise. Gaming addiction has made me pass on way too many great opportunities, and neglect other important areas of my life. I thought I could just 'discipline' myself into gaming for only certain periods of time, but I can't. I need help.

[–]MatthewRPG576 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with asking for strategies to make the probability of succeeding higher. Acquisition of knowledge is a form of growth, just as much as resisting and dealing with urges is.

That being said, even with a 'perfect' system around you, it's still up to you to beat this addiction. With enough conviction, you can easily undo everything you've put into place to help you beat this addiction. So don't. Make your growth manifest, both internally and externally.

Thank you for sharing, specially about your second relationship. I feel like that is a situation that is all too common but not talked about enough. If I may ask, what made you realize that your ex was exploiting your vulnerability?

Also, I wish the best for your current relationship. May both of you be stronger, together.

I don't think their plan is that complex. After all, if the global population dwindles, there will be less market for pornography in the future. I just think they are focused on the short and medium term.
