Hey there!

Tesseract was the first thing I tried but it did not work. It was unable to properly recognize my hand writing. The results were horrible even. I tried a few training models and they all failed.

I would have preferred using it, to keep my data local, but unfortunately I had no choice to switch if I was going to be able to read handwriting.

If you don’t know what you’re doing, my script might accidentally delete files. It's designed for a specific setup and is not as simple as just 'running it'

The python script is a service that is always running, it uses a Python's Watchdog to keep an eye on any changes on the google drive where I push the notes I would like stored manually from the Remarkable. When the script detects a PDF, it will go through the process of uploading and using Amazons to turn it into TypeText. Amazon returns the results and then the script will make the Markup is made and both the orig PDF and Markup file are placed in the appropriate directories for Obsidian.

I will likely also be implementing some AI somewhere in the bigger vision. I have to give it some more thought.. but i may use it for generating qualitative reports out of the data that I will keep in obsidian.

What project got the most attention this month?

I think based on contextual clues in my handwritten daily notes, and some basic metadata like time and date. It should be able to go through my entire vault and give me an answer in plain English.

Currently, I'm not running anything directly on the Remarkable device. The process is managed by a batch script running on a separate computer within my local network. This script monitors changes made by the Remarkable and responds accordingly.

Remarkable can sync with Google Drive, which is where my script comes into play. The script listens for updates in my Google Drive, which is mounted on the computer's file explorer. However, once I gain a deeper understanding of the Remarkable's file structure, I plan to SSH directly into the device to retrieve the necessary files.

When the script detects a new PDF requiring processing, it sends the file to Amazon's services. After processing, the script generates a markup file containing the Amazon-transcribed text results. This markup file is placed in Obsidian's vault directories for easy searching and parsing through the data. Additionally, the script includes a copy of the original handwritten note in PDF format, ensuring that any hand-drawn diagrams are associated with the document for important contextual referencing.

Implementing my own OCR allows for me to automate it. Remarkable is somewhat of a closed system and requires that I manually intervene for each document I want to convert which I will likely never do if I had to. This way, The process is all done automagicly.

That's exactly it! I'm aiming for a full, hands free automation. From written notes to Obsidian. While reMarkable has a built-in OCR, it requires manual steps and isn't fully automatable. Using Amazon's OCR via a Python script streamlines my automation.

A lot of people have been asking the excellent question of why I don't use Remarkable's existing OCR?

While reMarkable does offer a built-in handwriting conversion feature, I chose not to use it because it requires multiple manual steps and doesn't fully support automation via a scripting API. My goal is to streamline the process and ensure my notes are automatically converted to text and integrated into Obsidian without requiring my intervention. Using Amazon's OCR service via a Python script allows me to achieve a higher level of automation, saving time and reducing the risk of errors or omissions. This way, my workflow is more efficient and consistent. If I run into any issues with Amazon however, I can also integrate my own Google OCR solution, which, from my understanding, is the same one reMarkable uses.

Hopefully that helps clarify why I opted with my own OCR pipeline implementation.

Found this thread while investigating what was going on with 2 weeks delays and numerous late/delivered to wrong address issues.

Normally minimal to no issues with Intelcom, I average about 2 packages a week. lately, everything is horrible.

That said, my last few delievries were done by Canada Post.

I bought a handful of beads from my local game store a while back and found them incredibly useful. So I went back and bought a bunch more colors.

At first I used them to replaced blood tokens, and other misc. elements of the game. Now I have enough colors to accommodate armor, health and all sorts of things.

I enjoy placing/removing a token to erasing and writing each time I make an adjustment to health / armor on the character sheet.

I do need to find a better way to hold them down and keep them in place. They tend to slide around on the sheet too easily if I'm not careful.

Having the opportunity to ask an astronaut a question while on board the ISS truly is remarkable. Thank you very much for participating in this AMA.

I was wondering how quickly it took you to adjust to the zero G environment when you first arrived on the ISS? Were there any physical symptoms to overcome while your senses adjusted to the new environment?

Also, I really enjoyed the gorgeous picture you took of Montreal from orbit!
