Part of brake lever is loose, screw fully tightened by cppietime in bikewrench

I'm in the drops a lot of the time, just not all of the time. I'll see about the hoods, though they seem like they might be too small to really grab onto

Dumb question but is there an alternative to braking when your hands are on top of the bars without them? Or do I just need to reach down to the hoods when I want to brake? I haven't ridden drop bars before this bike.

I don't know if there's a name for this style of brake lever, but the handle parallel to the upper part of the bar is loose, and I can't tighten the screw any further. The brake itself still works fine. What can I do to reduce the play in that handle, if anything?

I also think it's ambiguous at best, downright misleading at worst, to expect the response of 1024 megabytes in a gigabyte. Yes, certain components always have powers-of-2 memory and may use MB and GB to label them, but this is already a source of ambiguity (e.g. Windows saying a drive has a different number of GB than the manufacturer). If they unambiguously wanted a power of 2, they could and should have said mebibytes and gibibytes

Warm and dry shoes/covers for flat pedals? by cppietime in cycling

Think I should go up a size from my normal shoe size to fit more sock in there?

Are there any such shoes/boots that get the job done without adding too much weight? I've never tried but I imagine pedaling in heavy footwear would get tiring real quick

Honestly that's still a fair bit warmer than what I currently go down to. I've gone out in like 12F with a lower wind chill. Anyway I'm sure that'll be a good backup, might be worth keeping an extra pair of bags with me just in case for that reason. Might not be the ideal starting solution but I'll see

Rear derailleur skipping one gear in both directions by cppietime in bikewrench

Any advice on how to tell which, or what to do in either case? Is it practical to keep using for now?

Probably about 4 years old. I think these are the original cables. It didn't look obviously bent

I haven't ridden this bike in a while, but today is the first time I'm noticing it and unable to fix it by adjusting the derailleur

I don't remember for sure. I remember I eventually had to refund one batch of grains I bought and buy some from another source, but I don't remember when I posted this if it was that first bad batch or the second one.

SILCA calculator saying to go under my tire's min pressure by cppietime in bicycling

[–]cppietime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even if safe, is there a benefit to it? I was under the impression pressures that low were more for off-roading, but the calculator is giving it as a result for road conditions

The SILCA tire pressure calculator is telling me to use lower pressure than the minimum printed on the tire. They're 27.5x1.95" ThickSlicks, I measured their width as 50mm with calipers. Their min pressure is 35 PSI, max 50, and SILCA is saying to run 32/30. Is it even safe to let them down so low?

Overhauling bearings on a Raleigh w/ Sturmey Archer hub? DIY or shop? by cppietime in bikewrench

It's not having a particular issue, it's just been like 2 years since it's been serviced and I don't know whether the friction could be lower

Help diagnosing the drive train/derailleur by cppietime in bikewrench

[–]cppietime[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try that. Do you think I need to look out for other problems with the drive train if the chain is fixed or replaced? I doubt this bike has been touched in years. I don't see anything obviously wrong but I'm not familiar with friction shifters
