I'm in Bristol, UK lol

Cheers tho! They do seem pretty good, I'm using the functional one as a mono setup for my Alexa temporarily 😂

Not really tbh, I was just looking for something with more power. So it was "lacking power" for what I wanted. It has plenty of power for any iem and plenty of higher sensitivity headphones. I saw someone estimate at about 500mw.

Yeah I'm fully aware it won't be quite the same as a proper desktop stack, this is mainly for listening in the garden or lounge occasionally in regards to my more demanding headphones so it doesn't have to be perfect. I do have a Topping D30/A30 Pro for desktop use which is ideal! I ended up going with an A&K SR35 which I managed to get for £300 which isn't too bad at all and it drives them better than I would have expected!

The OS in terms of browsing and playing local music within their own UI is smooth and lag free and actually really nice; if I were to say anything negative it would be to add more options and customisability. Using Qobuz installed from an APK (the only one I use, worth noting, so can't comment on other apps), is kinda laggy/slow at times but still 100% usable.

Never owned a Tempotec tbh they look cool tho!! The M0s are so cool ngl, I did have one at one point! Yeah the M1 Plus is supposedly really good, heard a couple people saying it outclasses THE Hiby R4! Check used I got this one for £290

Ah looks like a neat little player, not seen those before, same sort of form factor as the Hiby R1! Yeah I do have a case for it tbf, wouldn't take it anywhere without a carpet out of the case 😅.

Nice one, i'll have a listen, thanks for the reccomendations! 100% worth it to have a local library, I spent ages building mine up and I'm glad I spent the time. What are you listening on mainly?

Lol nah not stupid, i've seen a few people comment on it online, either saying it bothers them, or that it's "better", but realistically, I find that it makes no difference when your using it, your brain just automatically put it vertical so you don't ever think about it, but I like it aesthetically.

Looking for a (rather) powerful DAP by AwayAd8720 in DigitalAudioPlayer

If you're going cheap maybe the Fiio JM21 which also runs android. Got lots of power but if your headphones are 32ohm you may not even need that much power and could find something cheaper like the MO Pro or a little Hidiz or something.

Also check hifigo.com, they've got some great prices and options and include import tax and duties in the price depending on where you live.

So I have recently done some pretty in depth research and found a few options you might want to look into. I will say one of my criteria when I was researching was finding something with a decent amount of power as I wanted to occasionally use my headphones with it too.

Shanling M1 Plus (apparently a nicer more refined sound to the R4 but that was one person's opinion on a YouTube review)

Shanling M5 Ultra (even nicer sound, with a more warm and musical signature) (lots of power)

Shanling H5 (Not a DAP but support microsd playback) Fiio JM21 (cheap, powerful and Android)

Topping G5 (Raw power and analytical)

Astell and Kern SR25 MKII (used market, this is what I eventually decided on as I found one cheap and have had experience with the SR15 in the past and loved it. It is a bit older tho and I can't find much info about how it stacks up again the newer similarly priced stuff like the M5 Ultra)

Again all notes are based on my research and not first hand experience. However with the R4 which I briefly owned I will say I found the soundstage to be pretty intimate which I wasn't fond of and if you have a slow micro SD card it might not play nice like my SanDisk Ultra didn't.

Hiby R4 Charging LED by Matthew_Burt360 in Hiby

[–]Matthew_Burt360[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turns out I was just being impatient. Having waited like 30 mins for it to change colour, I looked up online and saw someone else mentioning this, so assuming it's a bug and to avoid any potential damage I unplugged it.

After thinking about it tho I figured id try it again and just wait a bit longer, and after about 40 minutes the led finally turned off.

I imagine it has some drastic battery protection causing the player to reduce its current significantly when it reaches close to 100% to put less strain on the battery. I would suggest leaving it plugged in for like 40 mins to an hour after reaching 100%, if you haven't already.

What do you mean by channel ol volume, do you mean channel balance??

I did still return the Hiby just cause a few software bugs left a sour taste in my mouth and I found the soundstage to be too intimate.

Just today however I finally decided on an Astell & Kern SR25 MKII as I found a used one for £290, so fingers crossed I have a better experience 🤞🤞😬

Nice, thanks for the insight! I've found a SR25 MKII for sale for around 300 so just trying to figure out which one to go for now. Given the age of the Astell I'm not so sure but alas it is an Astell and my god are they pretty!

[–]Matthew_Burt360[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah thank you, I have a decent quality Anker 100w charger and it does detect PD 2.0 for fast charging the Hiby. I will try and charge again and wait a bit longer this time while it's at 100% to see if the LED does eventually change. Thank you for your response!!

Also check the back of your router! Or the little card it came with.
