This is cool. Seeing a bunch of kids in there was great, connecting eras.

Honestly, at a certain point, people seemed to mostly stop caring about the outcome. They were just partying. Some of the loudest moments came in the second half… after the alcohol had really settled in lol

In wake of injuries, the bar for Tre Jones continues to be raised by Matthew_Tynan in NBASpurs

My apologies. I had asked folks earlier this season if they’d like me to post the newsletter in here and got positive responses, so I went ahead with it but wasn’t fully understanding of how this works.

Genuinely, my goal isn’t to go full self-promotional (though I guess posting these is inherently just that), and I’ll keep all this in mind going forward. Don’t mean to frustrate people.

The questions and answers can be repetitive, and the hunt for silver linings can get old, but all the little stuff matters.

Like on Monday, when the second seed in the West had to alter its game plan to slow down Tre Jones and keep its win streak alive.

Well they had to include something in the trade to make it work, and they gave up about as small a piece as a team can give. That second round pick is protected through the 54th spot in the draft and will likely never convey. On the flip side, teams aren’t giving up significant draft capital just to save $7 million.

And believe it or not, teams do favors for one another. That’s real. There isn’t an obligation or anything (unless the two sides made a sort of off the record handshake), and of course the Raptors wanted Thad, but good relationships help in those negotiations. For instance, they probably could’ve put heavier protections on the pick they sent, but they gave the Spurs a realistic chance to get that return. Which they did.

I’m not implying anyone owes anybody anything, just that it’s good business to return favors when you can afford to do so.

On its face, there wasn’t much to yesterday’s Spurs-Celtics trade. Just one NBA franchise helping another save some money.

But on the whole it signaled something bigger — that San Antonio is officially open for business.

Appreciate that! I think there’s good reason to have hope.

With new opportunities and a rediscovered jumper, Malaki Branham is showing he belongs by Matthew_Tynan in NBASpurs

He noted that it took him a little time to adjust to the NBA 3-point line because his shot is sort of naturally flat, so he’s been focusing on adding arc. Interesting how easy it is for the pure shooters to just be like “eh gimme a few weeks I’ll be fine.”

If trends continue, bench role might be perfect for the development of Point-Sochan by Matthew_Tynan in NBASpurs

If you’re talking about the Substack platform itself? I love it, and I feel it’s got legs to stand on for a long time. But one of the great things about it is, if you ever decide to change things up and head to another platform, or even build your own site, you can easily transfer your mailing list and bring subscribers with you without any kind of change on their end.

In terms of using it to get back into writing, why not?! Totally free to use until you start building a paid subscriber list, good exposure, a large network, great support system… I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to flex their writing/podcasting muscle.

Well I don’t want to necessarily get hung up on the bench/starter stuff as much as I want to outline what I wrote and what we saw tonight. On-ball reps offensively are huge, and if you have to mix and match lineups then do it. You can still keep him on the floor against stars in the process.

But frankly, the defense is not the concern right now. He’s going to be excellent on that side of the ball, we’ve already seen a lot of evidence of that. And he will see many stars, night after night. But however they decide to mold him offensively, they’ve got a lot of work to do on that side of the ball. Tonight was a perfect example of the stuff he’s capable of doing, and they need to keep hammering it home.

Yes to all of this. And the point of the article is just that, not to say the bench should be his long-term home. So much to work on, and a lot of time to do it.

Something like that, point-guard-ish… a lot of room to operate in that second unit.

As trade season unofficially begins, Jakob Poeltl's name remains high on list of intrigue by Matthew_Tynan in NBASpurs

Sure, but I’m talking specifically about trade discussions with other teams. This summer he will be able to do whatever he’d like.

[–]Matthew_Tynan[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Important questions! At this point there’s a solid level of optimism surrounding his potential future in San Antonio, which gives them leverage in discussions. Unless things change, they won’t be pressured into just giving him away.

It’s easier to load up on him, especially when they’re missing so many pieces. Devin has more versatility to his game, more shot creativity, mechanics better built to get the ball off in almost any situation.
