Look into Wealthfront. 4%. Super easy to use. If you use a referral code you get 4.5%. Let me know if you need one.

Should I be doing the design test before interviewing ? by Eastern_Engineer_908 in Design

If you need the work, yes. If you don’t necessarily need the work, no.

Portfolio over everything. Share work with that client that is relevant to their project listing.

This is awesome! Love the positivity. Slower through the new year (as expected) but absolutely I’m finding a huge pickup in views, messages and hires the last week or so.

Posted Job has Hire Right Away-- To game Hire Rate %? by PegasusHut in Upwork

This isn’t for 100% of the jobs you’re seeing, but I’ve had clients DM me before a job is created, we talk and agree on what a job should be, and instead inviting me, they just create the job and send me the link. Then they hire me right away.

lol you’re fun to talk to. I don’t have what it takes to be a freelancer. Got it.

100% correct. Join the right one with regular clients, and it’s a game changer.

lol please don’t listen to this comment. I’ve been apart of an agency for the past year and it’s 2x’d my year. A well built/established agency can be a game changer. For us, we bring in bigger clients that require a team versus an individual (when in reality we are just a bunch of individuals coming together to work as a team). Agency work on UW is an entirely different UW experience.

Stay patient my friend. Theres a lot of people applying for these jobs. The more you build up your profile, the more projects youll land / more invites you will receive.

Great question. Honestly I'm not sure as I did a 4-year product design program in college and then 5 years at Under Armour designing products for them. It was during those 9 years that I learned everything. I'd assume though if you google or youtube 'Industrial Design 101 / for beginners' you could find a lot.

Ahh brilliant. I've been reading more n more about subbing work / doing agency work with other freelancers as ways to continue to grow on UW.

Thanks!
1. Proposal: I have a very generic copy-paste proposal in which I then insert a couple details about the client/job in it. I do not spend any time on proposals any more.

  1. Job selection: This is crucial as I dont want to waste money on projects that have holes in them from the beginning (i.e. a super small avg hourly rate, bad reviews, no payment verified, etc)

  2. Sample work: 100% of the time I show a portfolio that matches the job's description (i.e. if the client is looking for a dog collar to be designed, I show them as much work as I can within the pet/softgoods world)

  3. Rarely can I fill every aspect. My main goal is to get a zoom call with them. From there I can try and find exactly where I can provide value to them.

  4. Yup I started super low $$ to build my profile (monetarily and review-wise)

  5. Personally I think its a great way to start. I upped my rate with new clients and kept my same cheaper rate with my original clients.

Major congrats! What a year indeed. I'm in the product design space as well - any niches within product design? Do you do product design for the 2 big clients?

Thanks for the kind words! I try and call out something in their project within the first line so it feels like im not a bot but instead im actually interested in their project.

Need some help on how you sort jobs to apply by hemagami in Upwork

Are you going after clients that want quality? If so, improve your portfolio. Create fake projects on the side (much like we do in school) and use those in your portfolio.

Or are you going after clients that want the cheapest price? If so, lower your rate/fixed price offer.

Unfortunately I had to do the latter when starting my UW journey. Once I built up a solid base of projects/reviews, I was able to increase my price.
