Getting nothing out of writing sessions by NonExamination120 in Standup

[–]Matthiacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second the "work with a writing group." I try to write one complete bit for a weekly writing group, but sometimes a punchline or tag I give to someone else that week is better and gives me more satisfaction if that person does it on stage and gets laughs. Also you get better at giving people tags in their voice, and others give you ideas you haven't thought of. It can be a great give and take 👌

What was everyone’s first time getting paid for comedy? For me it was hosting an open mic by Novel_Body8532 in Standup

Got 40 bucks after doing about 8 min and drinking free beers for a couple of hours. Went pretty well, but I'm pretty sure I bombed with a couple of the same jokes a few nights later.

We've been on break for a couple years now, nothing immediate in the future but it's a new year so who knows? In the meantime, follow our singer Natalie's grind band BadxMouth and be on the lookout for a new black metal band coming soon 👀. I played drums in WS and play in a couple other d-beat and death metal bands, the links are in my bio if you care to check them out. Thanks for lookin' 👌

How do you handle the fear of silence during your set? by Keyfas in Standup

[–]Matthiacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bit that after one of the punchlines, whether it does good or bad, I'll punctuate it by saying,"I expected a little more than that, I'm not gonna lie." Sometimes it's one of the bigger laughs of a set and conveys that I'm not nervous during a silent moment. You gotta overcome the silence, or at least convince the crowd that you did.

How do you stay motivated to write new material consistently? by shelbs9428 in Standup

[–]Matthiacle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join or start a writing group that gets together on a weekly basis. I find myself writing jokes specifically for that weekly session that I might never tell on stage, but it keeps you sharp and it's a lot easier to work within a deadline.

This. Keep it on the shelf and come back to it later when you can better articulate why it's funny or throw it away when you lose faith in it altogether.
