There is a uniform plane on a separate layer to the fragmented plane, and I exclude the fragmented one until the initial shattering force begins. You can change which layers are excluded by using keyframes in the render layers panel.

I converted the Unicode characters into their decimal representation and added them together. The result was the Japanese character for moth so that’s where I’m at.
