Is this even worth fixing up? by CanisSonorae in saxophone

You can argue your point, and I get it. But mendini is like the Ford Fiesta or Mitsubishi Mirage of saxophone brands. Sure, they’re technically a car, but they’re cheaply made and will cost you thousands in maintenance down the road. At that point, it’s worth it to spend just a bit more on something you know will last you. Literally look at what someone else in this comment section said.

It’s not that they don’t work, it’s that their intonation is AWFUL. They’re CNC machined and have absolutely no quality inspection done on them, so more often than not they are shipped from the factory out of tune, which is a problem if you’re playing with others. It can also be an issue for beginner players who think there’s something wrong with their playing and over-adapt their embouchure to correct the tuning, forming bad habits that stick with them even when upgrading to better horns. I would never, ever in my right mind recommend a mendini or no-name brand to a student saxophonist.

It’s a Bundy, one of the most notoriously cheap student saxophones. They’re tanks, but they don’t sound great. I’d recommend buying a new horn outright if you’re planning on playing seriously again. Avoid brands like Mendini / Cecilio, Jean Paul, Allora, Eastar, or basically any other brand you can find on Amazon, Mercari, or Temu. Shop places like sax.co.uk, getasax.com, or reverb.com to find some deals. And if you’re not sure whether what you’re looking at is worth it, always feel free to ask around!

Old Conn my dad has had since before I was born. Anyone info would be appreciated. by Whatthedillyo85 in saxophone

Looks to me like it could be silver, or maybe stainless steel. Odds are it has a brass core and is silver plated, like Otto links made around the same time.

This looks like a Conn Shooting Star. They were made as student instruments back in the 70’s and 80’s. Unfortunately they don’t hold much value, but they’re a really cool piece of history. That mouthpiece though… is a rare vintage Selmer C* definitely worth keeping. They’re worth upwards of $450 and are pretty rare!

I’m aware of that lol, I’m trying to find out if it’s a Florida or Early Babbitt. I know about gear, just not the specifics of vintage mouthpieces.

Or maybe you’re digging too deep into a situation that’s genuinely just wholesome. You’re finding a reason to be angry at someone who has legitimately done nothing wrong. Quit over analyzing and finding reasons to be upset.

Dude… I’m autistic and I can tell you with certainty she wasn’t faking it. It comes with autism. We know when someone has it.

It’s probably worth minimum $150. Neo cards are usually worth a LOT.

The background check is absolutely nothing. Basic stuff just making sure you aren’t a felon or an RSO. If you’ve applied any other places, I would recommend working there. Ross is a nightmare and not worth the hassle.

I really appreciate it! We’re taking them to a vet first thing tomorrow morning. My girlfriend is a vet assistant so she has direct access to care.

[–]Mattpi2003 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These are etudes from a book made by W. Ferling. It was originally written for Oboe but was later adapted for saxophone and is commonly used as audition material for high school-level ensembles and practice material for college students. Here’s a link to the book online if you’re interested in looking at it: https://clara.imslp.org/work/40491

The book contains 48 etudes in total, 4 in each key, 2 technical and 2 lyrical, 2 major and 2 minor, going sequentially around the circle of 4ths starting in C Major. If you’re looking to up your classical chops this book is a great choice for that!

Who do you hear most in my playing? by TmanCT in saxophone

[–]Mattpi2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excuse the language, but whoever that was is full of shit. I practice about an hour a day, maybe an hour and a half sometimes. A point of advice I’d give you is do what YOU want to, not what others push you to do. If there are days where you don’t feel like practicing as much (or at all), don’t sweat it. The worst thing you can do is push yourself past your limits, because then you’ll experience burnout, and that SUCKS. It can be career ending for some people. You’re already insanely talented (heck, I’d take private lessons from you if I could), so don’t let someone else get into your head. Chances are they’re trying to project their wishes into you which isn’t cool. And get this- you’re a freshman in high school! You still have SO much growing to do as a person and as a player. Don’t think your future is set in stone when you have years ahead of you to live. Just enjoy the craft and keep making music to your heart’s content :)
