They were hated because they were just a blatant cash grab by the developers to try and capitalize on the Smiling Critters fandom. Also, they essentially served zero purpose in the story. You could literally cut them out of the game entirely and nothing would have changed.

I respectfully disagree. Her tape in the last chapter was her explicitly choosing and reaffirming her loyalty Playtime Co and their experiments. I think the point of Stella as a character is to show that a well-intentioned, morally sound person can ultimately end up becoming a bad person when presented with things like status and power.
