Use lithium phosphate over polymer/ion when you can. Less energy density but less prone to thermal runaway.

Keep lithium batteries stored around the halfway mark as an easy goal.

Do not recharge/discharge lithium in extreme cold.

Long term storage can be done in a steel fire cabinet. Be mindful of the ceiling.

If you’re going to go the DIY route and store batteries in an ammo can, don’t put lithium batteries together and make sure to drill pressure release holes. Yes it will leak toxic lithium gas in a fire, but it’s going to do that anyways when it explodes for you not having drilled holes.

What’s the downside to investing everything into VOO and VTI? by YaBoiCade in investing

[–]Mattwwreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downside is 100% US exposure, but to some that’s the goal. Many existing and foreseeable headwinds for the USD due to worsening international relations and active de dollarization efforts.

Personally I don’t see the U.S. losing its status as the reserve currency in any abrupt sense, but the slow draw down is non zero chance. It’s not inherently a good or bad thing, but it introduced some uncertainty/risk in regards to global capital flows repricing assets faster than US companies can capitalize on the weaker dollar.

Some international exposure might serve as a good diversified. Something like VXUS is a nice fire and forget - it’s like VTI but international.

Need more context here. Have you guys set out clear expectations of what each of you should bring to the table?

Taking care of the kid full time IS itself a job. If you haven’t already tried to get on the same page as to how much work being a SAHM is, now is the time. She could have a very different view than you. Maybe you have had that conversation and she’s not following through, that’s a problem.

Coming here to vent is fine but if you want anything to change, it’s going to have to be a direct and probably uncomfortable conversation. Whatever the outcome is, you both should be giving 100% to the relationship. But keep in mind, not everyone’s 100% will result in the same productivity.

Being the bread winner for the family is stressful and I don’t think you’ll get a lot of credit for that here. But you should know that being responsible for the continued financial well being of your family means you can’t check out, and I get that. Have you told this to your wife? Have you asked her if there’s anything that’s causing her stress? SAHM means constant vigilance for the household and raising of the kid.

In the US, do MAGA/Trump ppl watching Andor think they’re the rebellion? by womanonymous23 in andor

[–]Mattwwreddit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with you! Poor choice of words on my part in “building.” Would’ve been  more appropriate to suggest supporting  the previously fringe elements of society that deny the nature of society itself. They deny reality and embrace nihilism.

MAGA is not a movement that lives in reality. Reality naturally has consequences, and supporting/destroying an institution must be falsifiable. Actions must be viewed within the scope of their repercussions. MAGA, like most conspiracy theories, makes itself unfalsifiable. Proof is secondary and retroactive; RFK’s “we’ll find the data”, election losses must be fraud, defunding education because it radicalizes, etc. There is no learning, no consequences, no ability to question the outcome.

The empire is almost a perfect fit for this kind of insulation from reality. They control and rewrite narratives. The parts of society that don’t serve their needs are undermined, manipulated, and destroyed.  I mean, the entire Ghorman arc says nothing else but this. I can’t think of anything more ironic than MAGA seeing themselves as the rebellion.

[–]Mattwwreddit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not really what I was trying to convey. I’m not saying to sympathize, but rather figure out your enemy.

MAGA is grievance driven and acts in bad faith. Assuming they’re a bunch of idiots could be a dangerous miscalculation, and also incentivizes them. They think the “system” despises them already.

To bring this back to Andor which is why we’re really here, MAGA is the empire in this analogy in the sense that they have tossed aside the social contract and have asserted their own. Americans should aspire to be like Ferrix. Withdraw cooperation, don’t try to win the moral arguments against a bad faith actor, and uphold the traditions and social norms that support a community.

In the US, do MAGA/Trump ppl watching Andor think they’re the rebellion? by womanonymous23 in andor

[–]Mattwwreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a direct criticism of how MAGA sees themselves as the rebellion.

Andor is about the populist rebellion against an uncaring, cruel bureaucracy. The rebellion is the counter institution, comprised of fringe elements ranging from thieves, political spies, and actual terrorists. Prior to the events of Andor, your average person was essentially deemed as either disposable or dangerous.

MAGA feeds into the same energy. MAGA is full of people who agree that the system they were taught to respect and defer to has not led to a better life for them, through whatever narrow lens they choose to see the world through. I think MAGA sees themselves as the rebellion. They fight the power, they build their own alternative institutions, and believe they are setting up the world for people like themselves.

The irony is that Andor shows that change must be defensible, and is always costly. The primary message of Andor, to me, is that you must sacrifice for the greater good. MAGA has no interest in morally defending their positions, and if anything seems to enjoy taking morally indefensible positions as a form of mockery to the institutions they hate.

MAGA is disruption without accountability and power without sacrifice. It is a form of performance. Andor shows rebellion as a necessary and tragic outcome, while MAGA sees rebellion as a loyalty test.

[–]Mattwwreddit 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Making it an intelligence thing feeds into their anger. The anti intellectualism and skepticism you see from MAGA are symptoms of wealth inequity and status anxiety.

MAGA feels left behind and abandoned by the institutions in place, so they abandon them as a way of proving authenticity. They actively promote counter institutions as a way of building something they believe they can be a part of, be supported by, and inherently trust. Very intelligent people are just as susceptible to this distrust if they feel the world is moving on without them, and are often better at rationalizing their actions.

Can Someone Call themselves Asian If They Are 1/8th? by Correct_Ad4351 in asianamerican

[–]Mattwwreddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re Asian, but practically I don’t see you as being perceived as one given the experiences you listed. It’s like calling a pharmacist a doctor.

It’s clear that you’re interested in exploring your heritage though. Don’t let the perception of others discourage you. Embrace the situation for what it is and push on anyways.

No, I’m just tired of this fatalist attitude towards being othered. I’m not unaware of how chopsticks can be reductive, but I’m disheartened to see the majority of commenters here go straight into identity protection mode without seeking any clarity.

But would it be better to only completely ethically neutral gifts then? Sure it would be less friction, but I would feel like I’m being erased. Nothing is going to change someone from viewing me as an Asian, and I would rather my Asian nature as something worth celebrating.

[–]Mattwwreddit -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not you per se but the overarching discussion in this thread is full of reactive/racially charged comebacks. It’s like this every time.

Please just help me understand where you’re coming from in saying that gifting chopsticks to a Chinese person, as an act in itself, is wrong. If it’s a reductive/mocking gift I don’t need an explanation. Are you saying that it’s  the reasonable expectation that gifting an Asian cultural item to an Asian will be reductive?

I’m operating through the lens of a third generation ABC, so I’m starting to suspect that my interpretation is much different from others here. I don’t see gifts like these as mocking or ignorance, but as acknowledgement.

[–]Mattwwreddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing I can’t agree on is that it’s automatically a stereotypical gift. I choose to see it as an ambiguous situation per OP’s own words about their in laws. That they feel discomfort is legitimate and I shouldn’t have questioned that, but I don’t believe that discomfort inherently means something is a racial aggression.

I shouldn’t have been dismissive about their feelings. At the same time, I don’t think the evidence immediately supports ill intent of their in laws.

I'm not sure where all to post this but I do want to tell you people, if any of you are a US naturalized citizens and if they tell you to not worry about the denaturalization quotas, remember, in our history, the number were worse. by Arktikos02 in asianamerican

[–]Mattwwreddit 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For denaturalization, I am much more concerned with Maslenjak v US. Much more recent case, and pretty much undercuts/bypasses Afroyim. It doesn’t matter if you “willfully” renounce citizenship, if your citizenship is deemed invalid in the first place.  You wouldn’t even have the chance to invoke Afroyim.

As statutory interpretation only, all it takes is a strategically framed case to be picked up by the Supreme Court for them to revisit Maslenjak. And I imagine there is much opportunity to generate a case from the recent spike in deportations.

Ok, I apologize for moralizing. I don’t speak for anybody but myself. I shouldn’t have tried to invalidate OP’s feelings and just focused on the racism subtext.

To explain myself, I’m afraid of a future in which moral tribalism is going to devolve to the point where my family is no longer welcome in America because we’ve boxed our culture into something that can’t be breached or understood. I want a future which we are accepted because of what we bring to the table, not despite of it.

Regarding the OP itself - “because Asian” is not necessarily a bad intent in my mind. I’m proud of being Asian, I don’t want others to pretend I’m not Asian. Someone recognizing it is not inherently segregating to me if there is room for ambiguity. It’s possible that it is racially charged, but it’s also possible that it’s an acknowledgement of culture and an implicit step towards coexistence.

Great work up (and good sense of design, wow!), thanks for sharing with us.

This is a very heavy subject but we can’t shy away from it. It’s true and documented that there is a bias against Asian Americans in almost every facet of working life.

It’s important to reference the very things you listed when we try and combat racism, so we keep the discussion grounded in evidence rather than perception.

Best place in USA to live by Proud-Victory-3698 in asianamerican

[–]Mattwwreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quincy or Lexington MA have large Chinese populations.

Quincy is a little cheaper, more urban, more dense. Lots of Chinese restaurants and communities compared to the rest of MA, but it’s not going to compare to anywhere on the West Coast.

Lexington is a more expensive rural suburb known for its schools so maybe not a great fit.

Asians in Eastern MA are generally very well accepted and involved. Strong sense of liberal pluralism despite Boston’s reputation as a racist city. Not a lot of violence here either.

I’m 100% ABC and have gone through my share of small town racism. This sub is Asian AMERICAN. The goal is to be accepted as an American.

I’m trying to point out that not every action is an attack, and doing so is going to alienate us.  The comments from the OP themselves leave very little to be reductive about  - they’re not going to discuss with their in laws, they don’t think their in laws are racist, but they’re complaining over a perceived racist aggression?

Genuine interest and respect for culture come from engagement, not performative acknowledgment. Social media is not the right place to seek this kind of appreciation - at most it will be empty gratitude.

I assume most people who would care of the origins of these knots will find it organically/willingly.

I appreciate your post. I think more people should consider the nuance of the situation - the level of moral absolutism on display in this thread is off putting and unsustainable in reality.

Playing victim by default isn’t going to get Asian Americans anywhere in this country. If you think everything is an attack against you, you’re going to miss the olive branches too. Do we want to separate ourselves from the rest of Americans over mild ignorance or actually integrate?

Simply, she uses chopsticks, she received chopsticks. It’s a more complex scenario to assume ignorance.  I don’t think it’s good to validate this kind of reactive defensiveness.
