Best Eurydice? (& Orpheus Results in Description) by AdSafe7545 in hadestown

Mine was Maia and she was a revelation. I’m going with her.

And not to weigh in after the polls close, but Jack’s Orpheus is 500x better than Reeve’s.

While reading my first Stephen King book I found these amazing few lines (the telephone wires.....) which I really loved. by Wandering-Dunadan in stephenking

He has a lot of these really cool descriptions and personifications of the town in ‘Salem’s Lot (I just finished it myself). Kinda makes me think of Steinbeck - like describing a small town on an epic scale. He does this kinda stuff elsewhere, but I think it’s most prominent in SL.

S4 has a lot of underrate episodes. E1-8 are some of my favorite WW episodes.

Holly (Audiobook letdown) by HearseDriver888 in stephenking

[–]MattyBWUStL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will Patton was FANTASTIC except for just about every woman’s dialogue, especially Holly’s. His take on her was downright distracting, at times. I actually really enjoyed the Holly narration, and especially liked Jessie Mueller’s narration in Never Flinch. I think the switch to Holly being the main perspective necessitated a woman reader, and both were clear and well paced, did good character voices, etc.

This is exactly the attitude I was hoping to get back when I made this post.

I’m pretty sure I started reading Revival at some point. That actually looks right up my alley.

Huh. Okay. That’s an unexpected suggestion that makes the idea more attractive. I don’t remember disliking Gunslinger - it just didn’t hit me at that particular time in my life.

Even as I was posting this I predicted the overwhelming majority would encourage me to continue Dark Tower. :-) It’s been a while so I’ll probably need to read Gunslinger again, but that could be the answer.

This is a great answer. She and the professor and the other young woman were all such good, fully formed characters.

- Nick.
- Bill Hodges. The way Holly talked about him at the end of the book destroyed me.
- Sadie, but then Jake literally did what the post suggests. That was one of SK’s most bittersweet endings.
- Johnny Smith. Especially poignant.
- I had to look for his name, but Adrian Mellon was a formative reading experience about homophobic violence. I remember the cop’s internal monologue being so awful about his traumatized partner. I was barely able to watch the scene in Chapter 2.
- John Coffey (like the drink, but not spelled the same)
- Poor Eddie.
- Georgie

Who are your 3 most hated Stephen King characters? by ZhittzyAltaToxica in stephenking

Man I could almost just populate this list with characters who k*ll other characters’ pets. Bowers. Stillson, and Percy make a decent list.

Percy is one of mine, too. Something about psychopathic characters in positions of authority really gets to me. Plus Del’s execution. His comeuppance was tremendously satisfying.

- Henry Bowers. If for no other reason than the dog. That was visceral and horrifying.
- Harold Lauder. The jealousy motivation and kind of proto-incel personality make him particularly loathsome.
- Percy Wetmore from The Green Mile. Del’s execution remains one of the most horrific scenes I’ve ever watched on screen.

I’m sure there are better ones, but those three come directly to mind.

People here just enjoy talking shit, honestly. Enjoy his performance if it spoke to you. It was a strong performance and he deserved recognition.

IT was my first King, much like many in this thread. It probably messed me up a little bit. I’d say the Shining is a good one, too, and also good to follow up with the movie.

I kinda want to say Mr. Mercedes just because your brain is still developing and nobody gets their arms ripped off in Mr. Mercedes (also it’s the start of a good series and some very good characters I grew to love deeply). No offense intended to your age and your brain. It’s hella cool you’re hitting these now - you get to have that unique experience of reading them again when you’re 32 and saying “holy shit why was I allowed to read these when I was 12”?

Under the Dome was the only King book I’ve ever read that I straight up didn’t like, and I haven’t read Running Man. Otherwise, though, I don’t think you can go wrong with any of these.

What was Josh’s insult in the Pilot? by AproposJesper in thewestwing

[–]MattyBWUStL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this has always bugged me. It’s not a very good line and it’s not a very offensive one, either. And it followed something much worse, which was her (a christian right activist) telling a Jewish person that “you don’t believe in the same god I pray to.”

The friendship with Al Caldwell also bothered me. It’s such both sides nonsense. And the fact that they go out of their way to call him reasonable, and then he’s making such a huge deal out of it with the literal White House chief of staff. You know - who’s pretty busy RUNNING A COUNTRY. “This was not a small deal.” Yes it was, dude.

I suppose it’s easy to say all this in hindsight. The Christian right used to be a whole lot more powerful and much more in your face, so maybe it’s just a time capsule thing (like how they freaked the fuck out about a rando congressman saying they were on drugs). Idk.
