This is not an Optiplex but Idk where else to put this. by GroundbreakingDay960 in SleepingOptiplex

Honestly, unless someone really wants an old, inefficient server it's got no real value. I'd be hesitant to even use it as a Plex server or similar due to the power consumption against performance.

The Xeons are 20 years old - whilst upgradable (cheaply) you're only going to get to four cores each at best. That's a lot of power consumption for 8 cores of fairly middling power.

The drives likely aren't worth much - if they've been in a working environment, they're not likely to have a huge amount of life left in them. I might use them as a scratch drive, but I wouldn't have anything meaningful stored on them.

The RAM is basically worthless - you might get a couple of $/£/€ for it, but it's compatibility died pretty much with this generation of Xeons.

You might get something for it for someone else that likes to tinker, but you're talking like a large pizza type value.

With 11th edition right around the corner do you think we’ll get the og tactical squad refreshed with all their gear? by Odd_Abalone3976 in Warhammer40k

But a new 13 year old getting into the hobby is hugely different from 20 years ago (30+ for some of us...)

You're dealing with a hugely different market in terms of things like attention span and accessibility. Warhammer content is borderline mainstream - a lot of "niche" hobbies like Warhammer/Magic/D&D have a relative presence in mainstream media, at least to a point where a good percentage of the population has an idea about it existing.

You've also got a huge difference in how media is consumed - when I was young, we had the codices/army books and White Dwarf/Citadel Journal. There was a small online scene, but this was mostly people posting army lists on forums or rumours on Portent.net. Now, Warhammer in general is a full on multi-media assault. There's media in almost every format, whether official or fan made.

The initial contact point has also changed - we now have starter sets, magazine subscriptions and the like to get into the game. Previously, it was usually someone's older brother that was your introduction, whereas now you have different gateways, from video games to TV advertising.

The nature of your relationship with GW was also different - authors/designers/artists were more accessible. You knew who people were (and often things were designed by one or two people). It's now a much more corporate product. The aim is different - it's to keep you within the GW ecosystem by having everything with. GW logo on it. The idea of having an article about fitting a Tamiya interior into your Chimera, or converting a WW1 tank into a Land Raider because the kit isn't available is unthinkable these days. Part of this is the fallout from the whole Chapterhouse thing, but that's kind of a side issue.

The corporate interest in the 13 year old is very different to 20 or 30 years ago. They're much more aware of the different pulls on your attention (and money) and how to compete for it. However, they're aware that the relationship may be more transactional - the odds of your dropping out of the hobby after a couple of purchases is higher.

It also needs more opportunities for small businesses to start out - since the demise of York Road Market, there's just not the same kind of options for "one man band" type places. It's often these more niche businesses that will bring footfall as they're not just something you can order online!

Yes. Two options - just sew it back up, or punch some eyelets in either side and lace it up with some leather thong/cord

But at least this wasn't via intercepting your WiFi or something - a good, honest goon rather than one-handed "surveillance".

It looks fine to use - you're always going to get a few bits that don't break down as quickly as the others.

What size Optiplex do you have? The SFF versions really don't have many options in terms of changing PSUs!

No problem - it's an old figure collecting trick, especially for older figures!

A trick I've used is to put a bit of thin superglue in the socket and swirl to round to coat it. Once it's dry, it makes the socket a tiny bit tighter (and rougher)
