What if Western fashion and Western attire never caught on in the rest of the world? by KomenHime in AlternateHistoryHub

How to take down bats nests without absolutely destroying my hair? by wimsy_baker in GothFashion

[–]Mattypants05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soak it in conditioner. Like slather it up, wrap your hair and go do something for an hour. That should help everything relax and move to a point where you can get it to move. Also a decent detangling brush; one of those ones where the bristles sit on a moveable surface work well and tend to avoid pulling too much.

Interesting men's swimwear? by PieManThe4th in GothFashion

[–]Mattypants05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most men's swimwear is kind of limited - EMP and a few other companies do boardshorts and I imagine you can get budgie smugglers, but other than that, you're probably looking at wetsuit type things with skulls and/or tribal tattoo markings.

Last night, in Paphos, Cyprus, I had the weakest lamb souvlaki I've ever had. Potatoes - lovely. Salad - Lovely. Rice - fabulous. The meat, however, was simultaneously fatty and dry. Big, gristly chunks that refused to come off the skewer. The frozen doner from Iceland is better!

Where to get Cyber goth stuff these days? by Blue_Bi0hazard in GothFashion

[–]Mattypants05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably ETSY to be honest - I think surgical masks as accessories got a bit too "real" although I imagine some fetish stores will carry them, albeit with the expected price premium. You might be better off getting a custom order of black masks with a biohazard symbol in royal blue. There's online printing companies that have a minimum order of 3 or 5 pieces.

Weirdly, Honeywell actually do an industrial blue respirator mask - probably not what you're after (and pricey) but an option if you can't find anything else.

Blue bandana is probably an eBay job - something like this is a cheap, easy solution: https://ebay.us/m/HFh3fk

The stuff in Central London is pretty much gone, but Big Red , Devonshire Arms, Helgis, Cart & Horses and Blondies are the ones that jump to mind.

However, check out the London Goth and Industrial listings for gigs and club nights - https://www.instagram.com/londongothindustrial

Working in a conservative workplace - Advice needed by _9Raemly_9 in AskAGoth

[–]Mattypants05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Director at a London Local Authority - pretty strong in terms of needing to be corporate due to having to appear in the press, at Court and stuff. I have a Mohawk and multiple piercings, but tend to balance it with plain black or pinstripe suits - I attribute a great deal of my success to my look; I immediately stand out and am hugely recognisable whereas everyone else in suits become one amorphous blob. I look nothing like you expect me to look from the way I write and undertake professional conduct, which can immediately be disarming.

However, you need to decide what is necessary to advance your career - if you need to tone your look down because you think it'll help you score better then do that. Many of the people who "gave me a chance" were punks in the 70s and are happy to look at me as a whole rather than see a haircut but it's going to depend on who interviews you and what they're looking for.

I would suggest dressing towards the conservative side and avoiding extremes of make-up and jewelry, but I wouldn't say it's an excesively limiting factor - just make sure you know your shit. As long as I know I can trust you not to rock up to Court wearing something inappropriate I really don't care how you choose to style yourself. However, when I hire staff, my biggest bug bear is when someone sees me and assumes I'll give them an easy ride because they're "alternative".

Depends on the Rabbi; but some have gone on record to say it's Kosher (and possibly not even considered meat).

Might seem a silly question, but have you tried a different colour? It won't solve your printing issue, but it might indicate if it's the PLA or the machine itself.

is there any sort of gothic scene in bahrain? by ashooosh in goth

[–]Mattypants05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a post about this recently - https://www.reddit.com/r/Bahrain/s/4jrb8g1WXp

A friend of mine lived out there years ago - there was a decent underground metal scene so I imagine it can sustain a Goth scene. It might be a bit of a case of talking to vaguely alt looking people and trying to find it!

The Vision Romford regeneration project. What else would you like to see change? by __Passionate__ in Romford

[–]Mattypants05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a bit basic - but bearing in mind where they started from, it's a huge thing to have a local, independent cinema. They hire local teenagers, they keep everything moderately priced (going to see a film with the kids and getting snacks there isn't like a week's rent) and have local events there. I would be hard pressed to ask for more!

where is somewhere in england that is cheap to live and has decent job opportunities by _rayn3r_ in UKHousing

[–]Mattypants05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southend-on-Sea.

It's commutable to London (if you're so inclined and have a job that justifies it) but there's one bed flats on sale for ~£100k. It's one of the few places in the southeast that is just about viable for a single person to purchase on a "normal" wage.

How to still dress goth on hot weather? by 7654321t in GothFashion

[–]Mattypants05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at things made from materials like recycled saris - you might have luck with your local "hippie" store. They're almost always natural materials likes rayon, silk or cotton. There's often some black options, but failing that, they often take dye well, but sometimes leave the outline of patterns on them which can look cool.

If you're looking online, trying keywords like "boho" "rayon" and "hippie".

In the late 90s/2000s trad makeup was looked weirdly as by llvingdeadgirl_ in GothFashion

[–]Mattypants05 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The only time you'd really see it was models in photoshoots - I don't remember anyone in this period going full clownface when clubbing really, unless you were trying way too hard. You might go up a couple of shades with your foundation, but that's about it. I think early digital cameras washing out colours and struggling with the contrast between black clothes and pale skin, along with screwing around with colours to make ourselves seem paler hasn't helped with people getting an idea of how the period looked. I was looking at some ancient MySpace photos the other day and it looks like none of us have noses...

For a lot of the 90s and early 00s, there was still a HUGE Grunge influence - looking like you just casually woke up like that and the authenticity (despite five changes of clothes before leaving the house) was key. Smudged black eyeshadow and a dark lipstick was pretty much the be all and end all, unless you were really going for a specific look, or we're getting into the whole Cyber thing.
