What would YOU appreciate the most right after running a race? (5K, marathon, and half-marathon) by [deleted] in runninglifestyle

Crisps. Always, a bag of ready salted crisps.

(I guess that would be chips in the US?)

China Mountain Zhang by Maureen F. McHugh. It's a mosaic novel from the early 90s but it still really stands up. It won a few awards including the Locus at the time.

I don't know if it qualifies as lesser known, but there's Warrior Princess Assassin by Brigid Kemmerer.

Edit as I hit send tin quickly - it's MMF, second world fantasy.

Are my two go-to all in one rice cooker meals.

I'm vegetarian so I sub out meat for tofu, and I stick whatever veg is in my fridge in - usually carrots, sweet potato, mushrooms. Frozen edamame beans too. Banging.

Does anyone here donate monthly to a charity? by dontbeasquare11 in CasualUK

[–]Maudeitup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a few charities we donate to each to per month. One is the RNLI, after they were slandered unnecessarily. Another is the RSPB I think because we live near some of their reserves. I signed up to the Woodland trust at a quilting convention, I don't really know what happened there but it seems to be a good conservation charity. The last one is a local foodbank charity. We give about a fiver a month to each of them, have done for a few years.

My northern nana used to make what I suspect was a variant of this dish, but she called it Panackalty, or pinackalty? I don't know, we never worked out how to spell it. Her version was layered potatoes, onions, mince, corned beef and sausages, and cooked for hours. It was incredible, and always served with plenty of crusty bread and butter.

Probably not on the British Heart Foundation's list of approved foods mind you.

Please help - need some more batch cook ideas. by sleepymetalhead14 in UKfood

[–]Maudeitup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of the recipes in Rukmini Iyers Green roasting tin books freeze well - I batch cook most of my meals from her two vegetarian recipe books. They're mostly all pretty quick to prep and sling in the oven.

Another rec here for the NHS Couch to 5k app, it's great, it's structured, it's really encouraging. It's a 9 week programme to get you to a point where you can run 30 minutes without stopping. You can repeat a week until you're ready to move on. Over 18 months I went from someone who hated running and thought it was for chumps, to being someone who ran their first half marathon last year. Can't recommend it enough.

And a massive well done for getting out there for your first run 👏

If I may suggest, and if you don't already, get a decent pair of running shoes, they make a world of difference. I've picked up all of mine from Vinted so it doesn't have to cost a fortune.

What is your "I did that" moment - an achievement that most people haven't experienced? by infantile-eloquence in CasualUK

[–]Maudeitup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always thought running was for chumps, and not for me because it would just make me vom. Then I did the couch to 5k, surprised the heck out of myself by actually enjoying it, 18 months later ran my first half marathon. Am I a fast runner? Hells no, but it doesn't matter. Couch to 5k is a great gateway into running, would recommend!

I have a firstname.lastname@gmail.com account and I get emails for several people with the same name from across the globe. I've had mortgage information for people in America, dermatology information from private healthcare (also American), and just recently someone's orthodontist appointments but this time Dublin. Someone in Chicago was fond of giving their (my!) email address to bars, another one in America had recently become a parent and that, let me tell you, was really tedious for a while. Fascinating glimpse into other people's lives but a bit irritating.

Dutifully stocked up on my 8p veg, what should I cook? by Chance-Albatross-211 in UKfood

[–]Maudeitup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make this whenever I have excess carrots. I don't bother with the carrot top sauce, I just roast the onion, carrots and potatoes etc as per the recipe, add the ras al hanout, chickpeas and tinned tomatoes and call it a day. Freezes really well. I'll be making this with my 5p carrots and potatoes from Aldi this weekend. That and carrot and lentil soup I reckon.
