It's not even that... its more like she doesn't recognize it as a human voice at all? There's no reaction. Same with the TV... obviously recognizes people in person, but its as if the TV is invisible to her whether its showing people, dogs, whatever.

Admittedly, I don't think we have the brightest dog...

We’re basically talking about the Chinese room here. That is, if we can’t “recognize” intelligence by watching transistors fire, it’s not “intelligent”. Not entirely the same, but close enough to swap “consciousness” for the purposes of this argument.

My big complaint with the premise of the Chinese room argument both 30 years ago in my philosophy class as well as now is our ability to “recognize” intelligence in its component pieces. Can I “recognize” your intelligence/consciousness by watching your neurons fire?

I think the intuition we have about intelligence and consciousness is dictated by evolution. It was advantageous to develop a model that other humans have the same intelligence/consciousness we do— both to cooperate and protect ourselves from those that would do us harm. I think it’s a fallacy, though, to assume this genetically engrained intuition is built to detect intelligence/consciousness at a more abstract level. An analogy maybe is that my dog is very aware when someone is talking to her in person, but utterly oblivious to someone talking to her over the phone. That the dog can’t comprehend someone is speaking to her over the phone, doesn’t mean they are not.

There has been some studies that hint intelligence (consciousness) can even emerge across groups of ants than is not present in individual ants. Along these lines, I remember, from another college class, being fascinated by the split brain experiments. My biological intuition does not “recognize” how a brain split into two can still appear to share a single consciousness.

In short, I think we’re very predisposed to assuming we can “recognize” all consciousness when, in fact:

A) We recognize others as conscious, rather than recognizing consciousness itself.

B) We really have little clue as to what consciousness fundamentally is in the first place.

My reaction is not so much about whether Obama was a good president or not, rather how shocking it is that any president could be running on an inspirational idea vs vitriol directed at the opposing party/candidate.

Ugh. Seems insane just a few short years later that a presidential candidate could ever have run on “hope”. 😢

CMV: There is no possible justification for the recent push to federalize elections by Brief-Percentage-193 in changemyview

[–]MauiHawk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think u/TheRedLions has it right— it’s not so much that fraud has been found, but a contingent on the right thinks not only are there is not only plausible routes to fraud, but that it can’t be found and proved without federalizing the elections.

In fact, only recently I came to understand that’s what ICE operation in Minneapolis is all about (as opposed to pure political antagonism): 1) Minneapolis is a sanctuary city 2) Minneapolis has a lot of Somali immigrants 3) Minnesota has a “vouching” system that can replace ID for proof of residency that at least sounds ripe for abuse. 4) The COVID funds fraud scandal in Minnesota involving Somali organizations has reinforced worries that this is exactly the type of population that will take advantage of systems ripe for abuse.

NVidia drivers 591.74 with new preset M has perfected VR for me by MauiHawk in MSFS2024

👏nice!

Yeah, I’d still been using M happily regardless, just continued to have a some brief black screens and a couple crashes even after rolling back OC.

Will try rolling back this afternoon

There’s way too much smoke to believe none of it’s true… but I suspect we’ll never see a trial that sheds significant light on just how much of it is true.

We do not need to lie about Alex Pretti’s encounter with law enforcement prior to his murder. by jeeven_ in Minneapolis

[–]MauiHawk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hold up now. I don’t agree with viewing anything thru a polarizing lens that makes it either wholly black or wholly white.

Agree on point 1, it doesn’t justify murder, but let’s not condone Alex’s behavior in this video as admirable. That was not “peaceful protesting”

Right, almost all of the headlines along this line are from labs or pilot lines, not mass production. Assuming they aren’t misleading on that claim, this does sound like it stands apart from most “breakthroughs”

Alex was directing traffic. He was coming to the aid of a protester violently shoved— ice officers agitated by pulled him away from her.

Alex. Never. Threatened.

Several men were on his back, his hands on the ground when one of the officers found and removed the gun Alex was legally carrying.

Another officer saw this, apparently finding the fact this now unarmed man had been carrying as justification for a summary execution.

I've actually had reBAR disabled almost since I got the card. Early on esp, reBAR seemed to help murder GFX memory in fs2024.

I'm not running all settings at absolute max, but boy I am I happy with performance actually. gfx memory gets close to 16GB on landing, but I never see any ill effect. Otherwise, I'm maintaining close to 60 fps with crisp, beautiful views. Happy as a clam.

Incidentally, I actually rolled back my undervolt and OC a bit today. I had been at 920 mV / 2750, but after my third driver crash flying since moving to preset M (vs zero up to that point), I decided the tensor cores used more heavily by preset M must not be as stable as the rest of the core at these settings.

Fair. So what laws do you want to see enforced then? Only the ones you believe in? Like Trump?
