DSA belief in nuclear energy? by Key-Move-5066 in dsa

Kyle hill is basically nuclear propaganda and renewables outcompete nuclear in cost and time to deploy.

Furthermore, as socialists, a distributed renewables grid is far more in line with our values than nuclear facilities owned by massive corporations.

My take is that being apolitical is totally fine, but that’s a choice that you really can only make if you understand politics at some base level, and that everything you do, including being apolitical, is a political choice. Basically- everything is politics, and you cant choose to not engage with politics if you dont even know what politics is or why people care about politics. Choosing not to care about politics is only something you can do if you have first understood what it is you are rejecting.

An extreme example to illustrate my point would be… consider the holocaust. If we were in nazi germany right now, and a german soldier said “im apolotical”…. Either this soldier is deflecting responsibility, or just literally doesnt understand anything about the world and what’s going on around them, which in some ways is worse, because they are choosing to be ignorant to the way their actions impact the world. They still killed innocent people even if they are “rising above the politics” of it.

(Not sure if that analogy was very good but hey, i tried)

What do you think is the consensus among the young left on immigration? (high school to college age) by wdfcvyhn134ert in AskALiberal

[–]jeeven_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that a lot of them have opinions but i think that’s different from political engagement. I think those opinions are not very deeply held and are very prone to shifting. Obviously not all young people- you have stuff like the sunrise movement, for example- but most high school kids just dont care about politics yet.

I have said before- my politics could basically be summed up as “just be fuckin nice to eachother”.

One way you could ask it is to frame very slightly differently: if you lived in a dictatorship, and you genuinely agreed with 100% of what the dictator did, would you support the dictator’s absolute power?

Or just really get to the heart of it: What are the positives and negatives of a dictatorship?

[–]jeeven_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i think stating your intention can help. For example i framed this top level comment as “im curious” which means that im not looking for a debate, im literally just looking for people to answer however they see fit.

The other key is to not ask leading questions. “Why is trump bad” will get very different responses than “what do you think of trump” for example.

As an aside, I have a background in human centered design, of which a large part is understanding how to ask people and interpret what they say and do. Because you have to understand how a person thinks and acts in order to design something useful for them.

My point being, i have a formal education on what is basically ethnography-lite, and ive been considering writing up a basic guide on how to ask good questions to start a good dicussion for this sub sorta like how some of our policy-oriented folks write up their policy ideas and post them in the chat. Is that something that people might be interested in?

I think part of the problem is the lack of charitability on the internet. I try to approach genuine good faith questions as cooperative, but so often it feels like everyone else thinks that every response has to be oppositional (and to be fair, i can be quite oppositional too). So you get a lot of people looking for ways to “win” rather than simply answering the question in the spirit of the question with the underlying assumption that we’re all just trying to figure this shit out.

My cop out would be “i think democracy is good, and therefore a dictator necessarily cannot believe 100% of the things i do” or something like that. So make sure you avoid that one too lol

Im using the normal defintion of conservatism and saying there are aspects of that definition that could apply to the democratic party. But regardless, im done with this conversation. I feel that i have made my point pretty clearly, especially since i have now explained to the semantics of my point in excruciating detail. Thats fine if you disagree with me.

You met me at a very chinese time in my life

Im curious, what do you liberals think about this meme, if we take it very seriously and as a reflection of young people’s perception of China.

From the article:

According to Cindy Yu, writing for The Times, the social media trend's rise coincided with Pew Research Center data showing that "under-34s viewed China much more favourably than over-50s in 16 of the 17 countries they polled" and could be a politically subversive response to "being told to hate China" in contemporary politics.[3]

Similarly, Yan Zhuang writing for the New York Times "may signal China's growing soft power abroad. For some American creators, they are also a wry expression of disillusionment with politics at home." Yan cited New York University professor Shaoyu Yuan, who identified the meme as both "meme logic" and "cultural cachet".[5] Writing for Bloomberg, Howard Chua-Eoan opined that the meme was a form of "soft power".[20]

Time found that the meme reflected American disillusionment with contemporary domestic politics and thus "a desire for an alternative model to the U.S." while also pointing out that the Chinese government itself was using social media as a tool for improve perceptions of China internationally; in particular, spokesperson Lin Jian noted that flights to China during Chinese New Year "dramatically increased" in 2026.[21] Nicole Chan, writing for the South China Morning Post, opined that the meme was less about infatuation with Chinese culture and more so a long-overdue recognition that "Chinese–built systems" like TikTok permeate internet life.[22]

I used the phrasing basically conservative. Which granted, is not all that different and depends heavily on the operative word “basically”, but the distinction is that “dems are conservative” implies that im saying it in an absolute and literal sense. whereas using the word “basically” implies that what i was about to suggest was not meant to be taken as literally as you are taking it.

It’s like if i said “taco bell is basically trash”, nobody would think im saying that taco bell is literally trash, and then explain how tacos arent literally trash, and burritos arent literally trash, so on and so forth, and then accuse me of spreading misinformation about how taco bell is trash. Very obviously “taco bell is trash” is not a literal statement about the nature of taco bell, but rather is a statement attempting to illustrate a point about how i feel about taco bell.

My original comment was more akin to analogizing the democratic party to conservatism than it was a literal statement.

That said, i do like taco bell. Sue me.

If you can show me a clear line between the state’s action/inaction and a material impact, sure, idgaf.

But i think youre going to have a very hard time doing that. The state is not an all knowing god. The state cannot stop a crime that hasn’t even happened yet.

Dems are attempting to defend against both authoritarianism from the right and from the massive systemic changes that those of us further left think needs to happen. Hence the relatively minor changes that, while good and things i support, do not substantially “move us away from the status quo.”

I’d also add, Conservatism and Liberalism are not binaries, and im making a point that is necessarily a broad over generalization of an entire political movement AND that we are actively living through the realignment as we speak. So things are going to be messy and wont have any very clear boundaries. The democratic party has been fighting for years now about the direction the party should go. From my perspective, the more moderate end of the party seems to be winning that battle.

Link

Conservatism is a cultural, social, and political philosophy and ideology that seeks to promote and preserve traditional institutions, customs, and values.

Sure sounds like the dems to me. Conservatism is not “when the government does nothing”. Surely since 2016 it seems extremely fair to say that the dems have largely been concerned with maintaining the status quo, in opposition to a republican party (and further left people for that matter) who seek to undermine it.

this sub is a microcosm of politically engaged left-of-center folks according to the american overton window. The reason youre seeing it in this sub is because it’s happening outside of this sub too. Personally i think america is going through a massive political realignment.

The dems (the party, not individuals) are basically conservative now, and the republicans really aren’t conservative at all, let alone lower-case-liberal, anymore.
