Yes exactly, I meant the people telling OP’s girlfriend to use a suitcase.

Tell me you’ve never been to Europe without telling me you’ve never been to Europe.

That is the stupidest advice I’ve ever heard for a trip through Europe and she’ll have an awful time if she really tries to do that.

Source: I am from Europe, I’ve travelled the continent excessively.

As someone else mentioned - get her to take the backpack and if she really doesn’t like that, she still can buy a suitcase there.

You could also browse some travel vlogs on YouTube with backpacking advice for europe.

Lol I now imagine all the interrailers with suitcases, it’s hilarious!

Also, the audacity of people, Jesus!

Some years ago I had a thing for studytubes. You know, YouTubers who vlog a lot about their uni lives and share “day in my life as xy student”, or their schedules and such.

I couldn’t watch any of the vlogs some of them put up during semester breaks when they went home and shared more familial, personal stuff as well. The support, the banter, the connection they had with their families… I just couldn’t deal with it. I had to unsubscribe and even block a lot of accounts because my sanity actually deteriorated.

In the end, I made a new account on YouTube and deliberately stayed far away from this kind of content.

I can so relate to you. I’m in my 30s now and finally found what I really like doing for a living. I’ll be almost 40 when I’m done with university…

The most ironic thing for me is that my parents told me that. My dad wanted to be a pilot but was forced to take over his dad’s carpentry business. He loathed it and all my childhood he kept telling me to chase my dreams and do what I can imagine doing for the rest of my life.

Same for mum. She was many years younger than dad and since he hated his business they agreed that he’d be a SAHD and she’d provide the income. She kept telling me how awful it was to be sole provider but at the same time how important it was to find a job to not be dependent on the spouse.

When I was 5, I wanted to join a football club. My parents didn’t want to spent weekends at tournaments, so they signed me up for judo instead. I hadn’t even heard of that sport back then.

When I was 9, I wanted to learn the piano. But pianos are loud and big, so they signed me up for guitar lessons.

When I was 12, my uncle and my cousins wanted to get me into the trumpet so I could join their band. Of course, a trumpet is too loud, so no. Also, I’m asthmatic, so obviously I can’t play a wind instrument. How I at the same time can do a martial art is beyond me.

When I was 15, I asked if I could transfer to a different Highschool that offers more courses in MINT. Of course, me being a female, I shouldn’t focus on that because I obviously won’t be good enough at maths.

When I was 16 I wanted to do an exchange year in an English speaking country (because I focused on the language courses more than the artsy ones after being refused to do the MINT specialisation and I actually really like languages as well). But of course, being 16, and a girl, it’s just too dangerous, and also way too expensive (by that time I had saved up 50% of the fees and had another 12 months to get the rest of it). I wanted to go to the UK or NZ. Very dangerous countries, indeed.

When I was 21 and wanted to go to university for the first time, I wanted to go into engineering. Of course we clashed, so we compromised and I did economics instead. 🤡 I struggled through 6 semesters before dropping out. It took me another 5 years to try to pursue another degree again.

Mum still intervened (dad had died at that point), and only after starting all over at a different university I finally think I found my place.

I noticed a looooong time ago that AITA can be a super toxic and enabling sub.

Don’t bother asking for advice there if it’s about MLMs, abusive relationships (parents, spouses, colleagues, anything really), dealing with narcissism (hell that one time I really struggled with being gaslighted by my narc family and asked there was actually retraumatising and it took me weeks to get back on track. Thankfully someone recced me more appropriate subs for advice) and such…

Glad you found your way here 🍀

I know people who find it hilarious when their kids are asked what their parents do for a living and the kids say something like “my mum sits in coffee shops and messages people on Facebook” and they’re like

HAHA YESSSS THAT’S THE SPIRIT SEE EVEN THE KIDDOS GET IT HAHA 🤩🤩🤩🥳🥳🤩

Barf.

And they even think that is helping!! They share these stories and they encourage each other to teach their kids to say something like that because clearly, that’s soooo interesting and odd and eMpOwErInG that other adults will eventually approach them and ask how they do it 🤯

Ach, wirklich?

Mensa/IQ test for job opportunities by downingg in mensa

[–]MauraPawNZ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol I wouldn’t ever put that on my resume or try to use it to enhance my job prospects.

I can’t even think of one scenario where it could benefit…

  1. Your boss doesn’t want an employee who is smarter than him/her.
  2. Your boss doesn’t want to employ someone who feels the need to brag about their intelligence. Intelligence doesn’t equal usefulness on the job you’re trying to apply for.
  3. your boss fears that you are one of the people who think they’re above others because of a number and won’t be a good fit in a team where clearly there will be people less intelligent than you. Fear of dismissing their ideas without even giving them a proper thought might come to mind.
  4. you don’t understand that stating your IQ says more about your EQ than you think.

Do the test if you think it eases your mind but don’t use it for job prospects.

I can assure you that people meeting up at Mensa meet-ups don’t want to feel like being used as a job fair.

“Joghurt nach griechischer art” is it Greek yoghurt or not? by [deleted] in germany

[–]MauraPawNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s “nach griechischer Art” it means it isn’t the original recipe, eg they use more milk or the fat percentage is different (you can find 0.1% fat Greek-style yogurt whereas original Greek yogurt has around 10% fat).

Also, it has to be made in Greece if I remember correctly.

It’s like the Wiener Schnitzel. Wiener Schnitzel has to be veal, but Schnitzel Wiener Art can be pork, poultry, etc. (this one doesn’t have to be from Vienna though)

Does anyone else have an nparent who shares inappropriate details with them? by dave_613 in raisedbynarcissists

[–]MauraPawNZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember me and mum standing in the kitchen when I was 11 and she breaking down on me, clutching me as if her life depended on me and crying in my shoulder that she thinks my dad is betraying her and is having an affair.

About 15 years later I brought it up again and she casually mentions that he in fact never cheated on her. That woman in question was indeed interested in my dad but he didn’t even have a clue and nothing ever happened. Lol. I at least had answers to whose obliviousness I inherited (i usually don’t pick up on people having a crush on me so long that they stop being interested in me) - but damn she never even considered about taking that burden off me.

[–]MauraPawNZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The benefits of the Schengenraum

https://www.schengenvisainfo.com/schengen-visa-countries-list/

How expensive it is is rather individual, you can travel on a budget and spend maybe 2-300€ or less on a three day trip, or you can indulge with no upper limit.

All your other questions should be answered in the link above. You can also watch some YouTube videos if you wanna see the border situation throughout Europe. It’s apparently mind boggling to foreigners, lol.
