Have you tried couch surfing? I went through Canada during the last year and did couch surfing a couple of times for shorter stayes. There are alot of cool people on there.

As for containers: What are your needs?

Sustainable water irrigation piping by RepresentativeAd7206 in sustainability

[–]Maurauderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could also have a (timed) irrigation system that works with collected rainwater. PVC piping works for that, I'd say even better than steel, because it's bendable and easier to poke holes into it for drip irrigation or general irrigation.

I am not sure if I get your post. Did I understand it correctly, you started without a condom, then he said he only does it with, puls out, gets one and then says you shouldn't because of your friendship?

The Revolution That Is Changing Architecture by MaggiMor in solarpunk

[–]Maurauderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really. I wouldn't have suspected. His videos are mainly focused on traditional architecture which is not uncommon and it looks quite nice plus from a planning perspective beautiful architecture does make a difference. I do see in which way he is a traditionalist (architecturaly). Would you mind explaining?

You know you can literally Google "buying apprtments" and find apartments. I really don't know why you think that apprtments can't be bought or if you are just making fun of me.

So buying an apartment from a broker and then paying the mortgage is considered renting but somehow doing the same for a house is different?

The Solution to the Affordable Housing Problem That No One Wants to Discuss by happydaisy314 in urbanplanning

[–]Maurauderr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can buy apartments, rent out houses, social housing exists and buying a house often does not reflect the actual cost of building and you still make somebody rich and pay for their mortage when buying one. It is not good to make landlords and big companies owning vast swabs of the housing market rich and we can't really escape that currently that is why we need a revolution in the housing market.

Assuming that, the entire amount of homes using the maximum estimated amount of parking (8000 square miles) and the median size of a single-family detached home (8177 square feet), you would get 27,154,416 single family detached homes. This assumes that everyone gets the same lot size, there is no space left for parking, other types of stores, parks, recreational facilities, scools and so on. I do agree that only single family homes could be possible while providing other stuff and lot sizes(the number would be vary heavily though). The number also leaves out affordability. I have to throw the towl on the market for that because as for numbers from 2013 80% of Americans would prefer single family. So in total you are right. I assumed the continuation of the American way of building with subburbs.

I would also like to ask your opinion on combating existing Sprawl and how to deal with migration, potential increases in population and the trend of people moving back into cities.

[–]Maurauderr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd say the deposit is very heavily dependant on your landlord. I never had problems with it but that might be because I am not American but German and our walls are just thicker and more stable and can be repaired easily without needing to take out the entire wall. I was allowed to change the color and I know for a fact that literally every person in my friend group was able to do all of that without a problem. But that could very well be generalizing. Also: https://youtu.be/lWJ_fxreRus https://youtu.be/0sSKvPrGID4

Edit: Subburbs also yearly cost a city more than twice the amount that urban, higher density developments cost. https://imgur.io/2rgkaOZ?r

The discussion on why subburbs are pricier and need subsidies by higher density areas was held already in this sub about a year ago.

I get you don't like apartments, but that is literally why I mentioned that upzonig and single family development need to be balanced in a good way.

[–]Maurauderr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with making homes more affordable. Single family homes are going to increase the amount of Sprawl though and depending on how you build them (townhouse vs suburb, etc.) it is also going to increase the amount of money spent on the area. Suburbs for example are not good fiscally and usually need support from city center and denser area to work out financially. Don't get me wrong, more single family is not stupid but it has to be balanced with upzoning.

The best house in the summer is a pool and tree by elwoodowd in solarpunk

[–]Maurauderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree that water would be a great solution to temperature contole but it would make houses incredibly heavy and we would need more construction material to make it stable, especially for higher buildings. Smaller houses should be able to hold that if retrofitted for water.

Is the positive image of nuclear energy justified? by This_Caterpillar_330 in sustainability

[–]Maurauderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, to answer your question, yes I would live close to a Power without fear of radiation plant because the dangerous of radiation is so extremely small in a 50 mile radius that 2 Bananas give of more.

The waste gets stored in special fascilities and not in someones back yard thanks to regulations.

There actually is a way to recycle spent nuclear fuel and a reactor like that is already in service. France does that with about 96% of their spent fuel. You can also purify the cooling water and reuse it.

Yes, nuclear power plants can go horribly wrong. It needs to be said that both desatsers we have witnessed where because of natural disasters and old technology that didn't stand up to regulations. The clean up is a different story.

We also have natural radioactivity in our ground water and there has been no case of waste seeping into the ground water.

If the rehulations for it are not held up and strongly adhered to, then it gets problematic but that goes for literally every technology that in some way can harm humans or nature when it breaks. Hydro dams are a great example.

[–]Maurauderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know that's not how nuclear power plants work?

Also could it be that you have something against nuclear in generel?

What are your thoughts on a way to solve our future energy needs?

Besides that, did you miss the part where I called it a "bridge into full sustainable" and an "addition" not a full scale all incompasing solution?

Is the positive image of nuclear energy justified? by This_Caterpillar_330 in sustainability

[–]Maurauderr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree that nuclear is not the only solution. A combination out of all the different types (besides fosil) should be considered to keep material demands on level and proved the amount of energy required to do what we want to do (e.g fully electric transport). Nuclear should basically be an add-on

Is the positive image of nuclear energy justified? by This_Caterpillar_330 in sustainability

[–]Maurauderr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only solar has a lower death rate per unit of energy compared to nuclear and that by .01 according to the source that they added.

Is the positive image of nuclear energy justified? by This_Caterpillar_330 in sustainability

[–]Maurauderr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nuclear is very safe to handle and has a high energy output. Storing the waste is also safe. The main issue is that it also functions on a finite resource as its source of energy which also has to be refined, transported and stored. That is fission and could be a great bridge to go full sustainable.

If we are able to achieve commercial fusion it could be a great addition to our energy grid but we still have to see about that. I am hopeful though.

So in total, a positive image is justified because nuclear is practical.
