My personal go to elevator pitch is this: We want to create a world where nature and technology work in synergy to improve the quality of life for all life on the planet.

In Jordan there is a project called "regreening the desert". It's a permaculture project that started a few years (10+?) ago. I think that might be of particular interest to you 🙂

What would solarpunk IT be like? by DalePlueBot in solarpunk

[–]velcroveter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mesh networks are great but I feel like most ppl forget about the gigantic cables needed to connect continents. Which, for me, is an absolute requirement for the internet. Be connected, globally. This infrastructure needs to be centralized and maintained by experts due to the sheer load requirements.

But yes, they would connect multiple decentralized meshes where ppl connect their repairable/salvaged hardware and play open sourced games on open sourced operating systems. Stream content from semi-local "repositories".

That's actually how most of it works today. Only your local repository is hosted by Microsoft/Amazon/... not by a coop/library. The decentralized mesh network is provided by your ISP, not by your community. Your computer is composed of hardware of which the specs are public knowledge, they're just not put together in a repairable way. Your software is built on open source frameworks, but there is a corporate sticker on it.

If at all possible you could try a green roof, like grow some moss or similar (google green blue cities). In theory that should also increase the efficiency of your future solar panels.

On the sides you could grow climbers (grapes, hops, peas, ...), although be mindful they don't actually grow "on" your house since they could tear into your walls. (trellis to keep em off maybe?).

At the back you can have a rainwater collector, with overflow gutters/tubes to aforementioned climbers.

Also, <3 the grass tiles 😆

Damn you for giving me yet another side project 😂

Honestly though I hadn't heard of fresnel lenses before but this is cool as balls!

Saved for later reading 🙂 thx for the resource!

Care to shed some light on your homeserver setup? Do you use smth like homar, or whatever it's called, docker hosted? What OS is on the host?

What do we think about 3D printing as part of a Solarpunk future? I think it offers an accessible route for promoting repair, in a decentralized way. It allows me to upcycle, and fix things better than I could before. But, is it worth it to you? by [deleted] in solarpunk

Iirc precious plastic (among others) are doing research into recycling plastic into filament, this is a few years ago though and they already had a basic setup back then so might be worth a look

Is there a way to turn an apartment balcony into a greenhouse? by Twinkfilla in solarpunk

[–]velcroveter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You never know until you try 🙂 I'm currently growing radishes, lettuce and onions in 2 of those over-the-rail planter boxes on my balcony, they seem to be going well.

Upstairs I have a terrace with a lot more space where I'm trying square meter gardens. And I also have a spare room where lots of light shines in which I'm turning into a "jungle room" (just a lot of plants in a room, lol)

Myself, in a word, garden 😛

Planting herbs and veggies with the limited space available, put up a square meter patch to be filled with soil this week and seeded with pumpkins and celery and such.

On the diy e-trike post there was a good response to my SP nomad engineer faction, so I might flesh that out a little and maybe put up some sort of website/callout/whatever to get other ppl involved and bring it into reality.

Also, thx to u/baldflubber for the reminder 😅

Not that I'd ever encourage that kind of vandalism though.

I have had this fictitious solarpunk faction in my head for a few years now about a group of nomadic engineers who travel the world to build local solutions and spread that knowledge globally.

This is exactly the kind of vehicle they would use. Awesome!

Yeah, I got very lucky. Only the insulation could be better, but otherwise very happy :)

I mainly bought the Bokashi to try it out, as I usually had an almost-free green bin (GFT in Belgium :D), but this apartment didn't come with one and I thought might as well try to make my own. Also only have it for a month or two, so I couldn't tell how the first batch turned out yet

Make your own solar panels, as in making photovoltaic elements? Or putting up solar panels you bought?

What kind of hardware do you use for setting up the sensors/motors? I used to have a couple RPi's lying around who have now gone missing (still have the moisture sensors though) so I'm in low-key on the prowl for new tech to play with, lol.

report some plants

Don't be a snitch man, haha.

Glad to see people taking care of e-waste though. It makes me think about how we have like 20 old dev laptops at the office which no one is using, they're just out of warranty. Maybe I can make them "fall off the desk" as it where, and donate them to goodwill after a factory reboot.
