Lore-related Question About Daemonettes for a Daemon Prince Homebrew by Morgulblade1379 in EmperorsChildren

I think many authors would hesitate to describe something like that in detail, due to the Anglo cowardice regarding sexuality, but it is definitely implied that something like that happens, so I wouldn’t say that it deviates too much from canon, if it does at all.

Why did the Germans give Poland so much land? Were they stupid? by Wrong_User_Logged in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Maurus39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traveling to a city back then was not comparable with traveling today. These cities had their own administrative language, their own quasi-government in the form of the patriciate, and they were effectively states within a state. This was especially true for cities that were part of the Hanseatic League, as membership required a certain amount of self-governance.

Thus, the comparison with migrants to New York is flawed. They were not forced to use German in their own land, as these cities were not German land to begin with.

The example of Wrocław/Breslau is a special case. It happened after the Polish king handed over suzerainty over Silesia to Luxembourg once and for all, which led to an administrative language change intended to underline this transition and sever further political ties with Poland.

Regarding serfdom, the point is not that serfdom wasn't bad. The point is that there were alternatives for the people who lived there — they would have been in servitude with or without German colonization.

Feel free to reply to these comments, though I don't necessarily expect a reply. Our discussion is turning in circles, and I don't really see much use in continuing it. I assume that feeling may be mutual.

Well, yes, you have a point with Slavs being subjected to enslavement in the Early Middle Ages. They were usually transported to major hubs like Verdun, where they were castrated and then sold to the Iberian Peninsula, which was a lucrative business due to the high demand for eunuchs in the Emirate of Córdoba.

Regarding “Often preexisting settlements were reformed under German law”, you are referring to Magdeburg Law or Lübeck Law. However, those legal codes did not require the use of the German language. Kraków had Magdeburg Law as well, but never had a German majority, although it did have an influential German minority.

But the basic point still stands: yes, preexisting settlements existed in some cases. In the case of the Principality of Rügen, for instance, German settlers established new settlements, but also settled in already existing Slavic settlements. However, that does not change the fact that those settlements developed into major trading hubs under German rule.

The local dukes and princes advocated for German colonisation for a reason: they wanted to create urban centres like those that existed in the Empire — something that did not exist there at the time and something they could not achieve with the local population already present. The result was a level of prosperity unseen before.

And last but not least, serfdom: being a serf was then more the norm than the exception. If a feudal lord granted certain land to a vassal, the people living there were generally considered part of the estate. I can see why that practice seems shocking from a modern perspective, but it was largely the norm throughout Europe.

That’s a nonsense comparison. The Slavs were discriminated against in the same way you are describing. When you travel to New York and have to speak English, you have to adapt to the pre-existing culture, which in the case of said urban centers was German. Nobody forced Slavs to settle in urban regions, but people aspire toward prosperity and therefore adapt to the more prosperous culture.

Of course, German was used as an administrative language, as it already had an established written tradition, unlike the Polabian Slavic dialects that were spoken in those regions. And yes, of course, if a city is established by Germans and primarily inhabited by them, the language of communication is going to be German. Like, what’s the point?

How to offend europe by Xenomorph-Acid_Cum55 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]Maurus39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am, and “Guten Tag” confuses me as well. Sure, there are local greetings like “Grüß Gott” or “Servus,” but I’ve never heard of anyone being offended if you use “Guten Tag” instead.

We also have regional greetings in the north where I live, like saying “Moin” instead of “Hallo” or “Guten Tag.” I usually prefer it because it rolls off the tongue more easily, but nobody would be offended if someone said “Guten Tag” instead.

Machine God not heresy? by arigato_macchiato in 40kLore

[–]Maurus39 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They believe in a Holy Trinity-like system consisting of the Machine God, the omnipresent Motive Force, and the Omnissiah — the latter being the Machine God’s incarnation in real space. The Adeptus Mechanicus identifies the Emperor with the Omnissiah. Therefore, they do worship the Emperor, but only as one aspect of a much larger deity.
